Maki Zenin

Maki is proud, blunt, fiercely competitive, and unwilling to accept the limitations other people assign to her. Growing up in the Zenin clan gives her intimate experience with a hierarchy that evaluates people according to inherited cursed techniques and traditional gender roles.

She responds not by seeking acceptance but by leaving. Her stated ambition to become clan head is partly revenge and partly proof that the standards used to dismiss her were wrong.

Maki can be harsh with weaker or inexperienced students. When Yuuta first arrives, she openly criticizes his passivity and self-pity. Her demands nevertheless come from a belief that people are capable of improving rather than from simple contempt.

She cares deeply about her classmates despite rarely expressing it sentimentally. Yuuta, Panda, and Inumaki become the community she chooses after rejecting the family into which she was born.

Maki's relationship with her twin sister is more complicated. She believes leaving the clan was necessary for both of them, while Mai experiences that decision as abandonment.

Maki's Heavenly Restriction dramatically reduces her cursed energy in exchange for enhanced physical capabilities. Initially, however, the restriction is incomplete, leaving her with physical ability far beyond that of ordinary humans but still short of the extreme state associated with Touji Fushiguro.

Because she lacks enough cursed energy to see curses naturally, Maki wears glasses infused with cursed energy. She can still physically interact with curses by wielding cursed tools.

Her expertise with weapons is exceptional. She can rapidly switch between polearms, swords, staffs, and specialized cursed tools while adjusting her movement to the strengths of each weapon.

Maki's raw athletic performance already exceeds what her Grade 4 classification suggests. She can overwhelm Miwa in close combat, pressure special-grade-adjacent enemies with appropriate weapons, and survive encounters that would kill many conventional students.

She possesses no innate cursed technique and cannot perform ordinary cursed-energy attacks in the same manner as most sorcerers. Instead, her entire combat style is built around physical movement, perception, weapons, and exploiting opponents accustomed to detecting cursed energy.

After Mai's sacrifice removes the remaining cursed energy shared between the twins, Maki's Heavenly Restriction becomes complete. Her body reaches a state directly comparable to Touji's, her glasses become unnecessary, and her sensory perception expands far beyond ordinary vision.

Later training and combat further refine her ability to perceive changes in air density, temperature, surfaces, and movement, allowing her to fight effectively even inside domains where conventional cursed-energy detection offers no advantage.

Maki first appears prominently in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as one of Yuuta's classmates. Their first mission together forces Yuuta to become more proactive while giving Maki an opportunity to demonstrate her cursed-tool fighting.

She later participates in the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons and confronts Getou when he infiltrates Jujutsu High.

In the main series, Maki is already an established second-year and one of the students recommended for promotion. During the Kyoto Goodwill Event, she fights Kasumi Miwa and then her sister Mai.

Their confrontation exposes the resentment underlying the twins' separation. Maki explains that she intends to return to the Zenin clan only after making herself powerful enough to take its leadership.

During Shibuya, Maki joins senior sorcerers in the operation against Dagon. She fights alongside Nanami and Naobito until the battle escalates beyond what conventional Grade 1 abilities can easily control.

Jougo's attack leaves Maki severely burned. She survives and later returns to the Zenin estate seeking cursed tools, only to become trapped in the clan's attempt to eliminate her and Mai.

Mai gives her life to remove the last cursed energy binding the twins together and creates a sword for Maki. Fully realizing her Heavenly Restriction, Maki destroys the Zenin clan's combat units and defeats Naoya.

She later enters the Culling Game, completes her physical and perceptual awakening during the Sakurajima Colony battle, and becomes one of the principal fighters against Sukuna.

Mai Zenin is Maki's younger twin sister and the most complicated relationship in her life. Mai resents Maki for leaving the clan and forcing her to become a sorcerer too, yet ultimately sacrifices herself to complete Maki's Heavenly Restriction.

Yuuta Okkotsu begins as a classmate Maki finds frustratingly passive. She becomes one of his first close friends, while Yuuta openly admires her determination.

Panda is Maki's classmate and frequent teammate.

Toge Inumaki is another member of Maki's year and one of the friends she trusts most.

Satoru Gojou is Maki's teacher and supports students whose ambitions conflict with jujutsu society's conservative hierarchy.

Naobito Zenin leads the Zenin clan during Maki's early career and participates in suppressing her professional advancement.

Naoya Zenin embodies many of the clan attitudes Maki rejects and later becomes a direct enemy.

Touji Fushiguro possesses the same type of Heavenly Restriction that Maki's body can ultimately achieve completely.
