Mai Zenin

Mai and Maki were born identical twins in the Zenin clan, one of the jujutsu world’s three great sorcerer families. Their father, Ogi, was an accomplished clan sorcerer who blamed his daughters for preventing him from becoming family head. The clan’s entrenched misogyny further reduced the sisters’ standing, and both were expected to serve more highly valued male relatives rather than pursue authority themselves.

As children, Mai depended heavily on Maki. She was timid, disliked frightening supernatural experiences, and followed her older twin through the clan estate. Maki reassured her that they would remain together, creating an expectation of lifelong protection that became central to Mai’s understanding of their bond.

Maki eventually rejected the family and left to become a sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High. She intended to rise through the official ranks, return as clan head, and reform the institution that had mistreated them. Mai did not experience the departure as liberation. She regarded it as abandonment because Maki’s defiance prompted the clan to intensify its demands on the twin who remained behind.

Although Mai never wanted the dangerous life of a sorcerer, she was compelled to enter Kyoto Jujutsu High and train professionally. Her resentment toward Maki grew from this loss of choice. The sisters therefore pursued apparently opposing goals even though both were responding to the same abusive environment.

Mai is caustic, provocative, and willing to exploit another person’s insecurities. During her first encounter with the Tokyo students, she belittles Nobara Kugisaki and questions Yuji Itadori’s supposed death with deliberate insensitivity. Her polished composure makes these attacks appear calculated rather than impulsive.

She is also pragmatic about the jujutsu world. Mai lacks the reckless disposition commonly associated with powerful sorcerers and sees little appeal in voluntarily confronting lethal curses. Mai is a tall, slender young woman with dark-green hair and matching eyes. Her hair is cut short and swept toward one side, leaving much of her forehead visible. She shares Maki’s facial structure closely enough that their relationship as identical twins remains apparent despite their different hairstyles and demeanors.

She normally wears the Kyoto Jujutsu High uniform: a dark, long-sleeved jacket, matching skirt, dark stockings, and shoes. Her uniform is fitted more conventionally than Maki’s combat-oriented clothing, complementing Mai’s controlled posture and understated presentation.

Mai carries a revolver in a holster and handles it with practiced confidence. The firearm is her defining piece of combat equipment, allowing her to compensate for limited cursed-energy reserves through marksmanship and tactical deception.

During longer-range operations, she can use a bolt-action rifle fitted with a scope. Her ability to move between handgun and rifle work establishes her as a trained shooter rather than someone dependent on a single weapon.

As a child, Mai wore traditional clothing associated with the Zenin household and kept her hair longer. Flashbacks visually emphasize her closeness to Maki, frequently placing the more fearful Mai behind her sister as they move through areas where cursed spirits may appear.

Mai is a Grade 3 jujutsu sorcerer with modest cursed-energy reserves. She can perceive curses, reinforce ammunition with cursed energy, and exorcise lower-level targets using conventional firearms. Against stronger opponents, she relies on accuracy, planning, and concealment rather than overwhelming output.

Her primary combat skill is marksmanship. Mai is proficient with revolvers at close and intermediate distances and can shoot accurately while under pressure. She also displays skill with a scoped rifle, providing ranged support during large-scale operations.

Mai’s preferred revolver holds six cartridges, a limitation she turns into a tactical advantage. An opponent who counts the visible shots may assume the cylinder is empty after the sixth round. Mai then uses Construction to produce a seventh bullet directly inside the weapon, bypassing the expected capacity and creating an opening for a surprise attack.

She can load nonlethal ammunition when required. During the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event, she uses a rubber bullet against Nobara, incapacitating her without violating the event’s restrictions on killing other students.

Mai’s greatest limitation is inefficient cursed-energy consumption. Construction requires an enormous amount of energy to create even a small physical object, and her reserves permit only one bullet per day without severe exhaustion. The technique also causes physical discomfort, making casual or repeated use impractical.

Because jujutsu treats identical twins as a single entity, Mai and Maki’s abilities interfere with one another. Mai’s cursed energy prevents Maki’s Heavenly Restriction from fully eliminating cursed energy, while Maki’s condition limits Mai’s potential as a technique user. Their shared condition can be resolved only when one twin is no longer present.

• Construction — Mai’s innate cursed technique converts cursed energy into physical matter. Unlike a temporary conjuration, the created object remains after the technique ends. Her limited reserves restrict ordinary use to a single bullet per day.

• Seventh Bullet — A tactical application of Construction rather than a formally separate inherited technique. After firing all six cartridges in her revolver, Mai creates an additional bullet inside the chamber to surprise an opponent who believes the weapon is empty.

• Cursed-Energy Ammunition — Mai channels cursed energy through ordinary bullets, allowing gunfire to damage and exorcise cursed spirits. This is a standard reinforcement application rather than a unique named technique.

• Final Construction — At the cost of her remaining life, Mai uses Construction beyond its normal limit to create a complete cursed tool for Maki. The weapon takes the form of a replica of the Split Soul Katana and becomes the lasting physical expression of Mai’s final request.

Maki Zenin — Mai’s identical twin sister and the most important person in her life. Mai loved and depended on Maki as a child, but Maki’s departure from the clan left her feeling betrayed and forced her into sorcerer training. Their hostility conceals mutual attachment, and Mai ultimately gives her life, remaining power, and final creation to free Maki from the limitation created by their twin bond.

Ogi Zenin — Mai’s father and a senior Zenin sorcerer. Ogi regards both daughters as failures and blames them for his diminished political standing within the clan. He deliberately wounds Mai and places her with Maki in a chamber filled with cursed spirits, treating their deaths as a means of preserving the clan’s authority.

Naoya Zenin — A prominent male relative whose status illustrates the hierarchy under which Mai and Maki grow up. Naoya openly endorses the clan’s misogyny and treats women as subordinate to powerful men, reinforcing the environment that restricts Mai’s choices.

Naobito Zenin — The Zenin clan head during Mai’s youth. His authority maintains the system Maki intends to overturn, though Mai shows little interest in contesting him directly or inheriting clan leadership.

Megumi Fushiguro — A relative connected to the Zenin succession despite being raised outside the clan. Mai encounters Megumi as a Tokyo student and initially addresses him with the same hostility she directs toward his teammates.

Kasumi Miwa — Mai’s Kyoto classmate and one of her closest friends. Miwa speaks warmly of Mai and is devastated by her death, indicating a bond far gentler than Mai’s combative relationship with her sister.

Momo Nishimiya — A fellow Kyoto student who understands the discrimination women face in jujutsu society. Momo defends Mai’s perspective to Nobara, explaining that women from powerful sorcerer families are expected to be both capable and conventionally perfect while receiving little recognition.

Aoi Todo — Mai’s powerful but difficult classmate. She finds Todo’s personality exhausting and participates in Kyoto team operations alongside him without sharing his eccentric enthusiasm.

Kokichi Muta — Another member of Mai’s Kyoto class. Both rely on forms of ranged combat and participate in the Goodwill Event under the direction of the Kyoto faculty.

Noritoshi Kamo — The Kyoto team’s principal organizer during the Goodwill Event. Mai cooperates with his plan to target Yuji, although her own assigned matchup develops into a personal confrontation with Maki.

Nobara Kugisaki — Mai provokes Nobara during their first meeting and later fights her during the Goodwill Event. Their conflict places Mai’s clan-shaped view of womanhood against Nobara’s refusal to conform to either traditional femininity or someone else’s model of strength.

Yuji Itadori — Mai mocks Yuji’s apparent death when visiting Tokyo and later joins the Kyoto plan to eliminate him during the Goodwill Event. Her direct involvement in the assassination attempt remains secondary to her confrontation with Maki.

Mai’s Mother — Mai and Maki’s unnamed mother lives within the restrictive Zenin household and initially urges her daughters to accept its expectations. Her submission reflects the life Mai once believed she could tolerate in exchange for safety.

Mai is introduced shortly before the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event. She and Todo visit Tokyo Jujutsu High, where Mai immediately antagonizes Nobara and Megumi. The encounter establishes the rivalry between the two schools while signaling that Mai’s strongest grievance is directed toward Maki.

During the team competition, Mai fights Nobara using cursed-energy gunfire. Momo’s explanation of the standards imposed on female sorcerers supplies context for Mai’s hostility, but Nobara rejects the idea that suffering excuses cruelty. Their battle ends when Mai incapacitates Nobara with a nonlethal shot.

Mai then confronts Maki directly. She expects her sister’s lack of cursed energy to make her an inferior combatant, but Maki closes the distance, catches a bullet, and defeats her. Mai attempts the seventh-bullet deception with Construction, yet Maki anticipates it and takes the created round from her.

After the fight, flashbacks reveal that Mai never shared Maki’s ambition. She wanted them to remain together and resents being forced to follow when Maki chose rebellion. Her admission reframes their rivalry as the consequence of a broken childhood promise rather than simple jealousy.

Mai later assists Kyoto personnel during the Shibuya Incident, arriving after the major confrontation has already developed. She remains a supporting combatant rather than entering the battle’s most dangerous exchanges.

Following Shibuya, Mai returns to the Zenin estate during the clan’s attempt to eliminate Maki and Megumi. Ogi mortally wounds both sisters and abandons them among cursed spirits. Mai uses the last of her strength to create a weapon, removes the cursed energy shared between the twins, and dies after asking Maki to destroy everything.

Mai initially appears to be a confident bully who enjoys attacking Maki and her friends. Her precision with a firearm and composed insults suggest control, while Maki’s departure from the clan seems to have left Mai aligned with the family they both despise.

The Goodwill Event dismantles that impression. Mai’s technique is useful but painfully inefficient, her combat ability falls short of Maki’s, and her commitment to sorcery is revealed as involuntary. She does not oppose Maki because she believes in the Zenin clan; she opposes her because Maki’s resistance made passive survival impossible for both sisters.

Her confession after their duel exposes the contradiction governing her behavior. Mai wants Maki near her but uses cruelty to punish her for leaving. She envies Maki’s courage while resenting the consequences of that courage, and she cannot openly request reconciliation without admitting how dependent she remains.

The clan’s later violence proves that neither sister could obtain safety by following its rules. Ogi is willing to sacrifice both daughters for political convenience, erasing any meaningful distinction between Maki’s rebellion and Mai’s reluctant compliance.

Mai’s final decision transforms her attachment from resentment into deliberate sacrifice. By taking the twins’ remaining cursed energy with her and creating a weapon for Maki, she grants her sister the freedom neither possessed while both were alive. Her request to “destroy everything” transfers Mai’s suppressed anger to the person capable of acting on it.

Mai’s surname, Zenin, is written 禪院. It is the name of her hereditary sorcerer clan and is shared by relatives descended from or formally attached to the family.

Her given name, Mai, is written 真依. The first character, 真, can mean “true,” “real,” or “genuine,” while 依 carries meanings associated with reliance or dependence. The latter meaning corresponds closely with Mai’s childhood reliance on Maki, though the manga does not explicitly identify this as authorial intent.

Mai’s name differs from Maki’s by one syllable, reinforcing their paired identity as twins. The similarity also reflects the jujutsu system’s treatment of them as a single being rather than fully independent sorcerers.

Critical and fan discussion frequently centers on her relationship with Maki, particularly the distinction between wanting freedom and wanting safety within an abusive family structure.
