Helmeppo

Helmeppo is initially cowardly, entitled and cruel. He uses promises dishonestly, orders violence without accepting personal risk and assumes his father’s rank places him beyond consequences.

Life as a Marine chore boy strips away those assumptions. Helmeppo resents hard work at first, then develops perseverance through training and begins taking pride in achievements he has earned himself.

His friendship with Koby becomes the clearest measure of his growth. Helmeppo moves from mocking Koby’s weakness to defending him before superiors and pleading for a rescue mission when Koby is captured.

Helmeppo becomes a competent swordsman who fights with two kukri-like blades. His style favors close-range slashes and rapid movement, a marked change from his complete dependence on guards in Shells Town.

Training under Garp gives him enhanced strength, speed and endurance. He learns Soru and develops Observation Haki, allowing him to operate in high-risk New World missions.

Helmeppo holds the rank of lieutenant commander and belongs to SWORD. Cross Guild assigns him an approximate bounty of 100,000,000 berries because of his Marine status and activities.

Although he remains below Koby and Garp in demonstrated power, he can defeat ordinary pirates and survive operations against the Blackbeard Pirates’ forces.

Helmeppo imprisons Zoro after promising to release him if he survives without food for a month. He secretly intends to execute Zoro instead, prompting Luffy and Koby to oppose Morgan’s rule.

After Morgan’s defeat, Helmeppo and Koby enlist as chore boys. Morgan later takes Helmeppo hostage during his escape, but Helmeppo refuses to attack Koby on his father’s behalf and is abandoned by Morgan.

Garp brings Helmeppo and Koby to Marine headquarters for intensive training. They reappear after Enies Lobby as commissioned officers and accompany Garp during his visit to Luffy.

Helmeppo participates in the Rocky Port aftermath, the Amazon Lily operation and SWORD’s response to Koby’s capture. He joins Garp’s assault on Hachinosu, helps free prisoners and escapes with the younger Marines after Garp remains behind.

Koby is Helmeppo’s closest friend and long-term training partner. Their relationship begins with Helmeppo threatening him but develops into mutual trust through shared hardship.

Morgan is Helmeppo’s father and the source of his original privilege. Morgan’s willingness to use him as a hostage destroys Helmeppo’s remaining loyalty and helps him choose the Marines on his own terms.

Monkey D. Garp is Helmeppo’s mentor. His severe training gives Helmeppo the discipline and combat ability that his upbringing failed to provide.

Roronoa Zoro becomes Helmeppo’s victim after killing the wolf that threatened a child. Helmeppo’s broken promise concerning Zoro’s release helps trigger his father’s downfall.

Monkey D. Luffy strips Helmeppo of his protected status by defeating Morgan. Hibari, Prince Grus and Kujaku later serve beside him in the operation to rescue Koby.
