Kushina Uzumaki

Kushina is energetic, stubborn, affectionate, and quick-tempered. As a child she responds to ridicule by fighting classmates, eventually earning a reputation for her explosive temper.

Her embarrassment can intensify that aggression. Other children mock her red hair and foreign origins, but she gradually grows to value the same hair after Minato tells her it enabled him to track the kidnappers who abducted her.

Kushina also possesses a nurturing side that becomes increasingly visible as she matures. Her relationship with Minato is affectionate and stable, while her hopes for Naruto center much more on his happiness and safety than on his becoming an exceptional shinobi.

She is exceptionally resilient. Becoming a jinchūriki, leaving her homeland, and living with the burden of containing Kurama do not erase her ability to form relationships or imagine a future beyond that role.

Kushina possesses unusually strong life force and chakra, even by Uzumaki standards. This makes her capable of surviving stresses that would kill ordinary shinobi and makes her particularly suitable as a jinchūriki.

She can manifest Adamantine Sealing Chains, powerful chakra chains capable of restraining targets and suppressing the Nine-Tails itself.

Kushina is knowledgeable in fūinjutsu, reflecting the Uzumaki clan's exceptional sealing tradition. Her expertise contributes to Minato's own advanced understanding of seals.

As the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki, she spends much of her life containing Kurama rather than using its chakra openly in battle. Her control relies heavily on the special qualities of her own chakra.

She is also a trained kunoichi of Konoha, though the manga focuses much more on her sealing abilities and jinchūriki role than on conventional mission combat.

Kushina's story is initially revealed through fragments connected to Minato, Naruto, and Jiraiya. A conversation with Jiraiya helps explain how Naruto receives his name: Minato and Kushina select it from the protagonist of Jiraiya's novel.

Her childhood history later reveals that she was brought from Uzushiogakure to Konoha specifically because her chakra made her suitable to succeed Mito as the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki. The official Naruto site confirms that she arrives from Uzushio to become Kurama's second jinchūriki.

Kushina struggles initially with the move and declares that she will become Konoha's first female Hokage. Minato's rescue of her during a kidnapping becomes the foundation of their eventual romance.

Years later, Kushina becomes pregnant with Naruto. Because a jinchūriki's seal weakens during childbirth, Konoha arranges her delivery in a secluded, heavily protected location.

A masked attacker infiltrates the delivery site, separates Kushina from Naruto, and extracts Kurama from her weakened seal. Despite the extraction, Kushina's Uzumaki vitality allows her to remain alive long enough to help Minato restrain the Nine-Tails.

When Kurama attempts to kill newborn Naruto, Kushina and Minato shield their son with their own bodies. Minato then seals part of Kurama into Naruto, while Kushina uses her final moments to give Naruto a long series of wishes and instructions for the life she will not be able to share with him.

Years later, chakra that Kushina placed within Naruto's seal manifests while he is attempting to take control of Kurama's power. She finally meets her son consciously, explains the circumstances of his birth, and helps him restrain the Nine-Tails with her chains.

Minato Namikaze is Kushina's husband. Minato Namikaze's acceptance of the red hair she once hated becomes an important moment in Kushina's childhood, and their relationship develops from classmates to partners and parents.

Kurama is sealed within Kushina as the Nine-Tails. Kushina uses her exceptional chakra and sealing chains to restrain Kurama, making their early relationship one of containment rather than partnership.

Mito Uzumaki is Kushina's predecessor as Kurama's jinchūriki and another member of the Uzumaki clan. Mito Uzumaki helps Kushina understand how love can give a jinchūriki strength against the loneliness associated with the role.

Jiraiya is Minato's teacher and an acquaintance of Kushina. Kushina and Minato Namikaze choose Naruto's name from the protagonist of Jiraiya's novel.
