Jodie Starling

Jodie initially presents herself as cheerful, excitable, and somewhat eccentric. She loves Japanese video games and frequently uses English expressions while speaking Japanese. Her enthusiasm can make her appear carefree even when she is closely observing the people around her.

Behind that behavior, Jodie is disciplined, courageous, and highly perceptive. She can maintain a cover identity for long periods and remains functional in dangerous situations. Her interest in Conan stems partly from recognizing that his intelligence is far beyond what should be expected from an elementary-school student.

She also carries intense feelings about Vermouth. The murder of Jodie's parents when she was a child shaped her decision to pursue the woman responsible and eventually join the FBI.

Jodie is trained in firearms, surveillance, undercover work, pursuit, and criminal investigation. Her work as an English teacher is a cover for her real occupation as an FBI special agent operating in Japan.

She is a capable marksman and can remain composed during armed confrontations. Her investigative skills include identifying suspicious behavior, gathering intelligence without exposing her objectives, and coordinating operations against dangerous organized criminals.

Jodie is bilingual in English and Japanese. Her exaggerated manner of speaking Japanese while posing as a teacher is partly connected to the persona she maintains during her undercover work.

Jodie enters the series as Ran and Sonoko's new English teacher. Her unusual behavior and interest in Conan make her one of several deliberately suspicious figures introduced during the storyline surrounding Vermouth.

Jodie is eventually revealed to be an FBI agent rather than a member of the Black Organization. Her surname is Starling, and the Jodie Saintemillion identity forms part of the cover she uses while investigating Vermouth in Japan.

As a child, Jodie encountered Vermouth shortly after Vermouth murdered her father. Jodie survived because she had temporarily left the house, while the subsequent fire destroyed much of the evidence. She later entered witness protection and eventually followed her father's path into the FBI.

After her cover is exposed, Jodie remains a recurring participant in FBI operations against the Black Organization, working with Conan and other agents during several of the conflict's most dangerous confrontations.

Shuichi Akai is Jodie's FBI colleague and former romantic partner. Although their relationship ends, Jodie retains strong feelings for Shuichi Akai and trusts his abilities as an agent.

James Black is Jodie's superior in the FBI and coordinates many of the organization's operations in Japan.

Andre Camel is a fellow FBI agent who frequently works alongside Jodie during operations against the Black Organization.

Conan Edogawa earns Jodie's respect through his extraordinary intelligence. She accepts Conan Edogawa as an important collaborator despite his apparent age.

Ran Mouri and Sonoko Suzuki are Jodie's students during her period teaching English at Teitan High School.
