Andre Camel

Camel is considerably gentler than his appearance suggests. He cares about his fellow agents, takes his responsibilities seriously and is willing to place himself in dangerous situations when an operation requires it. He can also be socially awkward, particularly when Jodie Starling unexpectedly asks him to play along with a cover story.

He carries substantial guilt over mistakes he has made. Two years before his introduction, Camel encountered an elderly man near the warehouse where the FBI intended to ambush Gin. Trying to protect the civilian, Camel warned him away without realizing that the man was connected to the Black Organization. This alerted the organization to Shuichi Akai's infiltration and ruined the operation.

Camel enjoys physical training enough for Shuichi Akai to describe him as a muscle-training fanatic. During his time in Japan, he also develops an appreciation for Japanese food, although unfamiliar regional expressions and dialects can occasionally confuse him.

Camel is a trained FBI agent with extensive operational experience. His standout skill is driving: he is regarded as an expert technical driver and can perform difficult maneuvers under pressure. This ability becomes particularly valuable during operations where the FBI needs to transport people, evade pursuit or execute plans involving moving vehicles.

He is physically strong and athletic, helped by his enthusiasm for regular training. Camel also demonstrates good reflexes and the composure needed to react quickly during dangerous situations, including operations involving explosives and armed members of the Black Organization.

His investigative skills are professional rather than extraordinary by the standards of the series' great detectives. Camel is most effective as a field operative working within a coordinated FBI team, where his driving, physical ability and willingness to take risks complement the planning of agents such as Shuichi Akai.

Camel arrives in Japan during the FBI's escalating struggle with the Black Organization. He participates in the operation surrounding Hidemi Hondou, better known within the organization as Kir, and initially behaves suspiciously enough that his true allegiance is deliberately obscured.

Camel volunteers for a dangerous role in the FBI's plan to return Kir to the Black Organization. His driving ability allows the agents to stage circumstances that convince the organization of the situation they want it to believe, helping preserve Kir's position.

His sense of obligation toward Akai originates from the failed FBI operation two years earlier. Camel's well-intentioned warning to a disguised Black Organization member exposed Akai's infiltration, destroying the FBI's opportunity to capture Gin. Camel consequently believes that his mistake contributed indirectly to the events that led to Akemi Miyano's death.

Camel remains an active member of the FBI team through later Black Organization cases. During the confrontation on Umizaru Island, the organization identifies him as an FBI agent and launches an extensive hunt for him. Camel survives by following instructions from his allies and using both his physical endurance and fieldcraft while the FBI attempts to keep him beyond the organization's reach.

Shuichi Akai is the FBI agent to whom Camel feels most indebted. Camel accidentally compromised Akai's Black Organization infiltration two years earlier, and the guilt from that failure drives his determination to help Akai whenever possible. Akai does not appear to hold the mistake against him and trusts Camel's driving ability during later operations.

Jodie Starling is Camel's fellow FBI agent and frequent colleague in Japan. She occasionally puts him into awkward social situations, including improvising a claim that the two are romantically involved when they need an explanation for their behavior.

James Black is Camel's superior within the FBI team operating in Japan. Camel follows his direction during the bureau's investigations of the Black Organization.

Hidemi Hondou becomes central to one of Camel's most important operations. Camel participates in the FBI plan that returns her to the Black Organization while preserving her usefulness as an intelligence source.

Akemi Miyano never develops a direct relationship with Camel, but Camel believes his mistake in exposing Akai's infiltration contributed indirectly to the circumstances that eventually resulted in her death. This forms part of the guilt he carries toward Akai.
