Ganta Igarashi

Ganta begins frightened, angry and overwhelmed by the prison's cruelty. He is not naturally fearless and frequently reacts to violence as the ordinary fourteen-year-old he was before his conviction. What distinguishes him is his refusal to stop moving once he has found something worth protecting.

He becomes increasingly determined as he learns how Deadman Wonderland operates. Friendship is especially important to him, and he repeatedly risks himself for people he has come to trust even when escape or self-preservation would be easier.

Ganta can also be consumed by anger. His hatred of the Red Man gives him a concrete reason to survive, but that desire for revenge is repeatedly tested by what he learns about the prison and his own past.

Ganta's Branch of Sin, Ganta Gun, compresses his blood into projectiles fired from his hand. The shots possess considerable destructive force, but every attack costs him blood, making excessive use dangerous through blood loss.

Training and repeated combat improve his aim, power and control. Kiyomasa Senji helps him understand that a Branch of Sin is shaped as much by technique and creativity as raw power.

The red crystal implanted in Ganta's chest by the Wretched Egg contains a unique Nameless Worm. His Branch of Sin later develops the Ganbare Gun, a much more powerful shot created by accelerating his blood, giving him the force needed to confront enemies beyond his earlier limits.

Ganta's ordinary school life ends when the mysterious Red Man enters his classroom and kills everyone around him. False evidence and a manipulated trial send him to Deadman Wonderland, where Tamaki presents himself as part of the system controlling his sentence.

After Ganta's Branch of Sin manifests, he is transferred into the hidden world of G Ward and forced into Carnival Corpse. His encounters with Senji, Minatsuki and the rebel group Scar Chain teach him how extensively the prison exploits Deadmen.

Ganta joins Nagi Kengamine's attempt to expose Deadman Wonderland and becomes increasingly involved in the struggle against Tamaki. His search for the Red Man eventually leads to the revelation that the killer is Shiro's Wretched Egg personality, forcing him to reconcile his memories of Shiro with his desire to avenge his classmates.

Shiro attaches herself to Ganta when he enters the prison and insists they were childhood friends. She is also the Wretched Egg responsible for the classroom massacre, making their relationship the central personal conflict of Ganta's story.

Kiyomasa Senji is Ganta's first Carnival Corpse opponent and later becomes his rival, mentor and ally.

Yō Takami initially befriends Ganta while secretly spying on him, but their friendship becomes genuine.

Nagi Kengamine gives Ganta a place within Scar Chain and helps turn his private struggle into an effort to expose the prison.

Minatsuki Takami fights Ganta in Carnival Corpse before becoming one of the Deadmen within his wider circle.

Tsunenaga Tamaki engineers Ganta's conviction and exploits him after his arrival at Deadman Wonderland.

Sorae Igarashi is Ganta's mother. Her research and relationship with Shiro connect Ganta's childhood directly to the origins of the Deadmen.

Mimi is Ganta's longtime school friend and one of the classmates whose murder drives his search for the Red Man.
