Tsunenaga Tamaki

Tamaki is sadistic, manipulative and profoundly detached from the suffering around him. He treats Deadman Wonderland as a game in which prisoners are pieces to be moved, sacrificed and replaced whenever doing so makes the experience more interesting.

His childish interests are genuine rather than a simple disguise. He loves toys and games and frames complex schemes through the language of play, creating an unsettling contrast between his harmless hobbies and the lethal consequences of his decisions.

Tamaki's worldview develops after the Great Tokyo Earthquake destroys the sheltered life he had spent playing games. Rather than emotionally engaging with the catastrophe, he eventually recreates the structure of a game on an enormous scale through Deadman Wonderland.

Tamaki has no Branch of Sin. His power is institutional: he controls personnel, finances, security systems and research programs inside Deadman Wonderland while maintaining connections with influential government figures.

He is responsible for developing and deploying anti-Deadman technology through the Undertakers. Worm Eaters neutralize Branches of Sin, giving specially conditioned ordinary humans a way to fight Deadmen.

Tamaki also directs research into artificial Deadmen. The resulting Forgeries use implanted Nameless Worms and Branches of Sin while remaining subject to control through specialized drugs and conditioning.

Tamaki manipulates evidence surrounding the massacre of Ganta's class and ensures the boy is convicted and sent to Deadman Wonderland. Once Ganta's Branch of Sin becomes apparent, Tamaki moves him into G Ward and uses him within Carnival Corpse.

He suppresses Scar Chain's attempt to expose the prison by deploying the Undertakers, then advances his artificial Deadman project with government funding. Kiwako Flügel Makina's investigation increasingly threatens his control.

After his projects collapse, Tamaki discovers that his supposed control over Deadman Wonderland has existed inside Hagire's much older plans. Unable to accept that he was effectively another piece in someone else's game, he shoots himself.

Ganta Igarashi is deliberately framed by Tamaki and becomes one of the Deadmen he studies and manipulates.

Kiwako Flügel Makina begins as a senior subordinate but becomes Tamaki's principal internal opponent as she uncovers his secret operations.

Genkaku Azuma leads the Undertakers Tamaki deploys against Scar Chain.

Bundō Rokuro secretly provides Tamaki's forces with information from inside Scar Chain.

Rei Takashima works within the medical and experimental system under Tamaki's administration.

Rinichirou Hagire is the deeper power behind the research Tamaki believes he controls, a revelation that destroys Tamaki's conception of Deadman Wonderland as his personal game.
