Deep inside the Forest of Death, Sakura Haruno and her allies struggle against the Hidden Sound ninja sent to test Sasuke Uchiha. The cursed seal left by Orochimaru continues spreading through Sasuke’s body, threatening to consume him even as it grants him terrifying strength.

With the examination deadline approaching, Team 7 must recover from Orochimaru’s attack, obtain the scroll needed to qualify, and reach the central tower. Elsewhere in the forest, the Hidden Sand team demonstrates why its youngest member inspires fear even among his own siblings.

Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, and Chōji Akimichi join Sakura and Rock Lee against the Hidden Sound team. Their coordinated clan techniques initially restrain the attackers, but Dosu recognizes their limitations and begins turning the battle in his team’s favor. Neji, Tenten, and additional Konoha genin arrive nearby, further shifting the balance.

Sasuke awakens under the influence of Orochimaru’s cursed seal and attacks Zaku with brutal efficiency. Disturbed by his behavior, Sakura embraces him and pleads for him to stop. Her intervention allows Sasuke to suppress the seal, after which Dosu surrenders his team’s scroll and retreats. Team 7 spends several days recovering before resuming the examination.

The volume also reveals the lethal power of Gaara, who annihilates a Hidden Rain team without allowing their blood to touch him. Team 7 eventually encounters Kabuto and cooperates with him against another Rain squad, using Naruto’s shadow clones to break an extended illusion-based ambush. After securing the required scrolls, the team reaches the tower and receives a lesson about the qualities expected of a chūnin.
