Personality
Personality
Sano is intelligent, calculating and habitually several steps ahead of the people around him. He often functions more naturally as a strategist than a front-line brawler, studying opponents and political circumstances before deciding where his interests lie.
His polished demeanor occasionally gives way to eccentric behavior, and the manga repeatedly uses his attraction to younger-looking males as a running gag. More seriously, Sano is capable of deception and shifting allegiances when pursuing a larger objective.
He is also intensely protective of the few people who earn his genuine trust. His relationship with Ryō Mimasaka exposes a more vulnerable side that he rarely permits others to see.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Sano follows the Flame Road and was trained by Spitfire. His specialization is the family of techniques called "Time," which exploit heat, speed and the human nervous system to create effects resembling temporal manipulation.
His Time Stop does not literally stop time. Sano uses carefully controlled heat to overstimulate an opponent's brain and disrupt the relationship between visual perception and bodily response. The victim perceives events but cannot make the body react quickly enough, giving the impression that Sano is moving while time itself has stopped.
His repertoire also includes the Wheel of Time, a high-speed series of rotating kicks, and other precision techniques derived from Flame Road principles. Kazuma Mikura, another Flame Road rider, eventually learns from and adapts elements of Sano's approach.
Later injuries leave Sano dependent on extensive prosthetic replacement, but he remains an effective strategist and combatant. His intelligence and understanding of A-T technology continue to make him valuable even when physical circumstances change dramatically.
Story Role
Story Role
Sano first appears as one of Behemoth's major riders during its confrontation with Kogarasumaru. His match against Kazu provides an early demonstration that the Flame Road can produce far more sophisticated effects than simply generating heat.
After Behemoth's defeat, Sano becomes involved with Simca and Genesis, serving as an adviser, counselor and occasional chauffeur. His intelligence places him close to negotiations and strategic decisions as the conflict surrounding the Regalia expands.
Sano later appears to betray Kogarasumaru while pursuing the Sky Regalia under pressure connected to his family and Genesis. His actual objectives are more complicated than the apparent betrayal, and he continues maneuvering between competing factions while seeking leverage against the Takeuchi brothers.
His later actions ultimately place him back in support of Ikki's side, with his strategic knowledge helping the coalition opposing Genesis.
Relationships
Relationships
Ryō Mimasaka is Sano's closest longtime companion, having known him since their school days. She is one of the few people around whom he lowers his carefully maintained façade. When Nike attacks Sano, Ryō intervenes to protect him and is gravely injured, after which her survival is used as leverage against him.
Spitfire is Sano's former leader and Flame Road mentor. Sano's Time techniques develop from the same Road even though his application differs from Spitfire's.
Kazuma Mikura first faces Sano during Kogarasumaru's battle with Behemoth. Their shared Flame Road creates an important technical connection, and Kazu later incorporates principles associated with Aeon Clock into his own repertoire.
Simca recruits Sano into Genesis after Behemoth's dissolution and relies on him as an adviser.
Yoshitsune is a fellow strategist with whom Sano maintains a friendly relationship.
Itsuki Minami eventually receives Sano's strategic assistance despite periods in which Sano's motives appear uncertain.
