Personality
Personality
Wazukyan is charismatic, easygoing and exceptionally confident in his instincts. Even as a village Sage, he behaves casually with ordinary residents and greets Riko with enthusiasm rather than ceremony.
As Ganja's leader, he inspires unusual trust because his predictions repeatedly prove correct. Belaf describes this ability almost as divine possession. Wazukyan can make drastic decisions without visibly losing his composure because he believes strongly in the future indicated by his intuition.
That certainty gives him a disturbing utilitarian streak. He cares about his companions and wants them to survive, but he can accept terrible sacrifices when he believes they are necessary to preserve the group or reach a desired future.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Wazukyan's most remarkable human ability is his seemingly supernatural intuition. His predictions repeatedly prove accurate despite insufficient information to derive them logically, including his expectation that Vueroeruko would join Ganja.
As a Narehate, he possesses a large body created within Iruburu and benefits from the village's supernatural system of value. His position as one of the Three Sages gives him considerable authority.
The story leaves ambiguous whether Wazukyan's predictive ability is literally supernatural or an extraordinary form of intuition.
Story Role
Story Role
Wazukyan leads Ganja across the sea and into the Abyss during an era before Orth exists. The expedition reaches the Sixth Layer but becomes trapped there, turning Wazukyan's decisions into matters of collective survival.
When contaminated water begins killing Ganja's members, Wazukyan supports using a Cradle of Desire on Irumyuui. After she begins producing creatures that can cure the expedition's illness when eaten, he feeds them to the survivors.
He later uses another Cradle of Desire on Irumyuui and participates in the chain of events through which her transformed body becomes Iruburu. Wazukyan himself enters the village and becomes a Narehate Sage.
In Riko, Wazukyan sees another person driven forward by an extraordinary desire to continue into the Abyss. He ultimately hopes that the destruction of Iruburu will provide Riko's group with something capable of carrying their adventure still deeper, continuing his fixation on moving forward regardless of cost.
Relationships
Relationships
Vueroeruko joins Ganja after Wazukyan predicts her arrival and becomes one of its Three Sages. Their relationship fractures over the sacrifices Wazukyan accepts to ensure Ganja's survival.
Belaf is Wazukyan's fellow Sage and one of the Ganja members who places extraordinary trust in his intuition.
Irumyuui joins Ganja in the Abyss. Wazukyan's decisions surrounding the Cradles of Desire and her children are instrumental in both saving the expedition and creating Iruburu.
Riko fascinates Wazukyan because her determination to continue adventuring resembles the drive that carried Ganja into the Abyss.
Faputa is born from Irumyuui carrying the accumulated purpose of destroying the village whose creation Wazukyan helped bring about.
