Riko

Riko is energetic, curious and extraordinarily determined. The Abyss fascinates her more than it frightens her, and she reacts to new creatures, Relics and environments with the excitement of a researcher even when they present immediate danger. She meticulously collects information and is capable of applying it quickly under pressure.

That enthusiasm also makes her reckless. Riko can prioritize discovery over personal safety and frequently needs Reg or other companions to prevent her curiosity from becoming fatal. She is nevertheless capable of making painful decisions when survival demands them.

Riko's optimism is unusually resilient. Injuries, terrifying discoveries and the prospect of never returning to the surface do little to extinguish her desire to continue. She does not view suffering as proof that the journey was a mistake.

Riko has no superhuman physical abilities and remains vulnerable to the Curse of the Abyss. Her principal strengths are knowledge, observation and practical cave-raiding skill.

She has studied Abyssal creatures, plants, Relics and survival methods extensively. Riko is also a talented cook who can turn unfamiliar creatures into edible meals, an increasingly valuable skill as the group descends beyond access to surface supplies.

Her glasses do not correct her vision. Riko experiences headaches without them because of complications associated with her infancy, and the crystal lenses help prevent those symptoms.

Riko later possesses a White Whistle capable of activating the latent abilities of powerful Relics. Its creation allows her to hold the rank symbolically associated with the greatest delvers despite the extraordinary circumstances under which she obtains it.

Riko begins as an apprentice cave raider exploring the First Layer under the Belchero Orphanage. After Reg saves her from a Crimson Splitjaw, she hides him on the surface and begins investigating his artificial body.

The recovery of Lyza's White Whistle and notes, including a message calling for Riko to reach the bottom of the Abyss, prompts her to begin her Last Dive. She and Reg leave Orth and descend despite knowing that the Curse will eventually make returning impossible.

Their journey takes them through increasingly dangerous layers and brings new companions into the group. At Ido Front, Prushka's Life-reverberating Stone becomes Riko's personal White Whistle, allowing Riko and her companions to activate the Altar of the Absolute Boundary and descend into the Sixth Layer.

Lyza is Riko's mother and the legendary White Whistle whose disappearance into the Abyss motivates much of Riko's journey.

Torka is Riko's father, who died before she was born.

Reg is Riko's closest traveling companion. She discovers him near the surface, names him and trusts his extraordinary body to help them survive their descent.

Nanachi saves Riko after the Orb Piercer attack and subsequently becomes a core member of her traveling group.

Prushka becomes Riko's close friend at Ido Front. Prushka's Life-reverberating Stone becomes Riko's White Whistle and continues accompanying her into the deeper Abyss.

Ozen knew Lyza and tests Riko's determination during her stay at the Seeker Camp.

Bondrewd stands between Riko's group and the route into the Sixth Layer, forcing them to overcome Ido Front before continuing their Last Dive.
