Genkaku Azuma

Genkaku is sardonic, sadistic and deeply nihilistic. He presents murder as an act of mercy, claiming that life inevitably produces suffering and that death releases people from it. His religious vocabulary provides a framework for violence rather than restraint.

He enjoys rock music, smokes and treats combat with an irreverence that clashes deliberately with his monastic appearance. When killing, his relaxed demeanor can turn into overt excitement.

His philosophy grows out of severe abuse during his childhood at a Buddhist temple and the devastation of the Great Tokyo Earthquake. After finding the kitten he cared for dead and encountering his former tormentors among the ruins, he embraces killing as his version of salvation.

Genkaku is not a Deadman and has no Branch of Sin. His strength comes from Undertaker conditioning, combat training and specialized anti-Deadman equipment.

His guitar functions as both an instrument and a weapon. It can separate into two machine guns and produce attacks capable of fighting Deadmen, while Undertaker technology can neutralize blood constructs generated through Branches of Sin.

Genkaku is also physically capable and accustomed to killing at close range. His willingness to attack indiscriminately makes him dangerous even to his own subordinates.

Genkaku leads the Undertakers sent to stop Scar Chain from escaping Deadman Wonderland and exposing the prison. His forces carry Worm Eater weapons that give ordinary humans a means of countering Deadmen.

His history with Nagi Kengamine gives the confrontation a personal dimension. Genkaku killed Nagi's pregnant wife after the prison punished the couple for deliberately manipulating their Carnival Corpse match. Nagi subsequently massacred twenty-two Undertakers in rage.

During Scar Chain's escape attempt, Genkaku tries to break Nagi psychologically and turn him against his allies. Ganta eventually defeats Genkaku with Nagi's assistance, leaving the Undertaker leader incapacitated.

Tsunenaga Tamaki commands Genkaku and deploys his Undertakers against the Deadmen.

Nagi Kengamine is Genkaku's principal personal enemy. Genkaku murdered Nagi's pregnant wife and later deliberately exploits Nagi's grief to drive him into a violent breakdown.

Ganta Igarashi opposes Genkaku during Scar Chain's attempted escape and ultimately brings him down with Nagi's help.

Karako Koshio is another Scar Chain member targeted by Genkaku and the Undertakers.
