Personality
Personality
Tokiyuki is gentle, peace-loving, modest, and initially almost completely uninterested in the prestige attached to the Hōjō name. The official anime describes him as a boy who cares more about Kamakura's peace than status or authority and who dislikes conflict despite being born into a warrior government.
His temperament changes dramatically once escape becomes part of a battle. Tokiyuki experiences an intense excitement when pursued by a genuinely dangerous opponent, and his concentration increases as the risk of capture rises. Where conventional warriors measure courage by advancing toward an enemy, he learns to turn retreat, misdirection, and survival into offensive tools.
He is also strongly attached to his retainers. Tokiyuki does not treat Shizuku, Kojirou Nezu, Ayako Mochizuki, and later companions as disposable servants. His instinct is to survive together, and his willingness to value retreat over glorious death gradually influences experienced warriors who were raised to regard dying in battle as an ideal. The official anime specifically contrasts his philosophy with warriors such as Yasaburou Hoshina, whose attitude changes after meeting him.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Tokiyuki's defining ability is elusiveness, a combination of reflexes, footwork, balance, stealth, spatial awareness, and an instinctive understanding of pursuit. He can slip through groups of adults, change direction abruptly, hide in small openings, and avoid attacks that should be difficult for a child to read. The official profile explicitly states that even adults have great difficulty catching him.
His weakness at the beginning is conventional martial skill. Tokiyuki is not naturally dominant in swordsmanship, archery, or physical strength, so Yorishige and his retainers train him to make escape itself useful in combat. During the dog-shooting contest against Sadamune Ogasawara, for example, he survives the superior archer's pressure by using evasive movement rather than attempting to equal Sadamune's established specialty.
As his experience grows, Tokiyuki learns to combine evasion with attacks made from unusual angles. He later develops forms of swordsmanship built around retreating from an opponent's ideal range, drawing them forward, and counterattacking once pursuit disrupts their posture. His specialized equipment during the Nakasendai Rebellion is likewise designed around escape rather than conventional armored advance. Shueisha's official manga summaries describe him entering that rebellion in equipment specifically adapted to his fleeing style.
Story Role
Story Role
Tokiyuki begins as the son of Takatoki Houjou, head of the Hōjō regency, living a protected life in Kamakura. He admires the celebrated warrior Takauji and has little expectation that his own evasive games will ever matter politically. The collapse of the shogunate transforms that childhood overnight: Takauji's rebellion destroys the Hōjō government, and Yorishige extracts Tokiyuki from Kamakura before he can be captured.
At Suwa, Yorishige begins preparing him for a return to political life. Tokiyuki acquires the retainers who become the Elusive Warriors, trains his unusual talents, hides his identity from the new authorities, and gradually participates in conflicts between the Suwa faction and forces loyal to the new government. His victories against enemies such as Sadamune establish that surviving and escaping can be strategically decisive rather than shameful.
Tokiyuki eventually emerges openly as the Hōjō leader during the Nakasendai Rebellion and leads an army toward Kamakura. His campaign temporarily restores Hōjō control of the city, but the larger struggle with Takauji continues far beyond that first reclamation. The official manga summaries describe Tokiyuki advancing as commander of the Hōjō army toward Kamakura during this stage of the story.

Relationships
Yorishige Suwa rescues Tokiyuki from the fall of Kamakura and becomes his protector, strategist, teacher, and surrogate father. Yorishige recognizes that the boy's strange talent for escape can become a military strength and builds much of Tokiyuki's training around it.
Shizuku serves Tokiyuki as a retainer, steward, spiritual adviser, and trusted companion. Kojirou Nezu is formally his vassal but interacts with him much like a close friend, while Ayako Mochizuki serves as both protector and training partner. The official character profiles emphasize the unusual closeness within this master-retainer group.
Genba Kazama joins after Tokiyuki succeeds in earning the mercenary thief's cooperation despite Genba's obsession with payment. Fubuki later becomes the group's strategist after recognizing Tokiyuki as a lord worth serving. Together they expand the Elusive Warriors beyond the original Suwa children.
Takauji Ashikaga is Tokiyuki's central enemy. Tokiyuki once admired him as a loyal guardian of the shogunate, making Takauji's rebellion both a political catastrophe and a personal betrayal. Takatoki Houjou is Tokiyuki's father, while Kunitoki Houjou is his older half-brother; the destruction of the Hōjō family gives Tokiyuki's campaign a deeply personal motivation beyond restoration of political authority.
