Personality
Personality
Yorishige is eccentric, theatrical, manipulative, affectionate, and extremely confident in his divine authority. He can move from solemn prophecy to exaggerated comedy in seconds, often making it difficult for Tokiyuki to tell whether his behavior is sacred revelation, deliberate encouragement, or simple mischief.
The frivolous exterior hides considerable political intelligence. Yorishige understands that a surviving Hōjō heir is both an enormous danger and a potential rallying point, so he protects Tokiyuki's identity while developing alliances throughout Shinano. He is willing to subject the boy to frightening tests when he believes the experience will teach a skill necessary for survival. The official profile explicitly notes that he imposes harsh trials while simultaneously worrying that Tokiyuki may actually get hurt.
His feelings toward Tokiyuki are strongly paternal. Yorishige does not merely regard him as a political asset; he wants him to mature without losing the compassion that distinguishes him from the era's conventional warriors. That attachment often makes Yorishige's supposedly all-knowing behavior less composed when Tokiyuki is in genuine danger.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yorishige carries the divine power associated with Suwa Myōjin and is revered as an arahitogami. The official anime describes him as simultaneously human and divine and notes the extraordinary faith the people of Suwa place in him.
His best-known supernatural ability is future sight. Yorishige can perceive possible future events and uses those glimpses to guide Tokiyuki's training and political decisions. The visions are not perfect predictions: they can be incomplete, unclear, or affected by changes in circumstances, preventing him from simply dictating every future event.
Yorishige can also manipulate divine power directly. His abilities include spiritual perception, blessings, manifestations, and other supernatural techniques connected to Suwa worship. Shizuku can reproduce some related arts on a smaller scale, emphasizing that Yorishige's power represents the highest level of the shrine's supernatural tradition.
Story Role
Story Role
Yorishige appears in Kamakura before the Hōjō government falls and immediately takes an unusual interest in Tokiyuki. Once Takauji's rebellion begins, he rescues the boy and transports him to Suwa, becoming the person primarily responsible for preserving the Hōjō succession.
In Shinano he builds Tokiyuki's foundation for recovery. Yorishige supplies shelter, education, retainers, military support, and a political network while keeping the boy's existence concealed from enemies such as Sadamune Ogasawara. His guidance also transforms Tokiyuki's instinctive fleeing into an intentional method of warfare.
Yorishige remains important not only because he can predict future events but because he understands when Tokiyuki must choose without prophecy. As the conflict grows into open Hōjō resistance, Yorishige gradually transfers greater responsibility to Tokiyuki and the younger retainers rather than attempting to control every decision himself. His later role in the struggle for Kamakura becomes one of the most consequential turning points in Tokiyuki's development.
Relationships
Relationships
Tokiyuki Houjou becomes Yorishige's protégé and surrogate son after the fall of Kamakura. Yorishige believes in his future strongly enough to risk the Suwa faction itself on preserving and training him.
Shizuku is Yorishige's adopted daughter and closest young attendant. She calls him "Father" and handles much of the practical work that his flamboyant personality tends to neglect. Her spiritual abilities also reflect the divine environment in which he has raised her.
Tokitsugu Suwa is Yorishige's son, while Yoritsugu Suwa is his grandson. The existence of his direct family complicates his paternal attachment to Tokiyuki, particularly because Yoritsugu initially resents how much attention his grandfather gives the Hōjō heir.
Takauji Ashikaga is the enemy whose rebellion destroys the political order Yorishige supported. Sadamune Ogasawara, appointed to power in Shinano after the shogunate's fall, becomes one of Yorishige's principal regional opponents as he attempts to uncover Hōjō survivors and weaken Suwa influence.
