Genba Kazama

Genba is cynical, greedy, clever, mischievous, and distrustful of idealism. The official character profile states that past experiences taught him to trust money above everything else, leading him to demand outrageous fees and retaliate viciously against clients who refuse to pay.

His mercenary behavior is partly defensive. Genba has learned that agreements based on sentiment can fail, whereas payment appears concrete and measurable. Tokiyuki gradually undermines that worldview by treating him with trust even when purchasing loyalty would have been easier.

He enjoys deception for its own sake and takes obvious pride in fooling people who consider themselves perceptive. Unlike Tokiyuki, who evades through movement, Genba escapes danger by manipulating what opponents think they see and know.

Genba specializes in espionage, infiltration, theft, impersonation, and intelligence gathering. The official anime identifies information collection as his principal role within the Elusive Warriors.

His signature equipment is an inherited fox mask capable of changing shape to reproduce another person's face. Genba can use it to impersonate officials, soldiers, and other targets convincingly enough to pass through guarded locations or manipulate enemies from within.

The mask does not replace acting skill. Genba studies voices, habits, posture, and information about his targets so that the copied appearance is supported by believable behavior. He is also agile, stealthy, and experienced at bypassing physical security because his career began as a thief rather than a battlefield warrior.

As Tokiyuki's campaigns expand, Genba develops into the leader of an increasingly organized intelligence network. His abilities become strategically important on a scale far beyond individual burglary, allowing the Hōjō faction to infiltrate enemy forces and gather information before major battles.

Yorishige recommends recruiting Genba because Tokiyuki's early group lacks a specialist capable of covertly stealing information. Genba initially views the request entirely as paid work and sees no reason to risk himself for a fallen lord without adequate compensation.

Tokiyuki accompanies him on a dangerous infiltration operation connected to Sadamune's forces. The mission demonstrates how naturally Tokiyuki's evasiveness complements Genba's deception: one avoids capture through movement while the other avoids recognition through disguise. Genba eventually accepts a place among the Elusive Warriors rather than remaining only an outside contractor. The official anime's character material identifies him as the group's ninja and former notorious thief.

His role grows as the conflict becomes larger. Battles between armies require intelligence, false identities, sabotage, and communications that conventional swordsmen cannot provide, making Genba increasingly valuable once Tokiyuki moves from hiding in Suwa toward leading an open political movement.

Later campaigns bring Genba into conflict and cooperation with other highly trained shinobi, forcing him to reconsider the principle that survival and payment matter more than personal loyalty. His eventual spy network becomes one of the lasting institutions created from the Elusive Warriors' original small group.

Tokiyuki Houjou begins as Genba's client and becomes his lord. Genba initially measures service by payment, but Tokiyuki's trust gradually earns a loyalty that money alone could not secure.

Yorishige Suwa knows of Genba's reputation and directs Tokiyuki toward recruiting him when the group needs an intelligence specialist.

Shizuku, Kojirou Nezu, and Ayako Mochizuki are already serving Tokiyuki when Genba becomes part of the Elusive Warriors. Their straightforward loyalty initially contrasts with his transactional outlook.

Genba's Father is the previous owner of the fox mask and the person from whom Genba inherits both equipment and lessons about survival. The manga later connects Genba's obsession with money to experiences associated with his father's life.

Fubuki becomes another major companion after joining the Elusive Warriors, adding military strategy to Genba's information work.
