Shinya Ozeki

Ozeki is gentle, earnest, emotional, and exceptionally persistent. His personality initially appears poorly suited to combat sports because he is easily intimidated and openly cries when overwhelmed. Yet the same person returns to the sumo ring day after day despite going years without an official victory.

He values the physical ring itself because he knows how much labor is required to maintain it. Yuuma's gang destroying the dojo is therefore more than ordinary vandalism: they destroy something Ozeki repeatedly rebuilt and cared for while nobody else took the club seriously.

Ozeki's confidence changes as the club grows. Hinomaru, Yuuma, Chihiro, Kei, and Kirihito give him teammates who expect him to act as captain rather than merely preserve a dying organization. He becomes more assertive without losing the kindness that originally distinguished him.

His failures also make him unusually sympathetic toward inexperienced wrestlers. He understands discouragement better than natural prodigies do and recognizes that persistence can be meaningful even before it produces visible results.

Ozeki has a naturally appropriate build for sumo and particularly strong legs and hips. His years of repetitive training give him a solid base, making him difficult to move once he establishes favorable positioning.

His preferred sumo centers on grappling rather than spectacular movement. Ozeki works to secure the mawashi, maintain balance, absorb an opponent's initial pressure, and convert years of basic practice into steady forward force.

His major weakness early in the story is not technique but competitive experience. Practicing largely alone means he has spent years repeating fundamentals without receiving the constant tactical feedback produced by real matches. Once Oodachi begins competing regularly, the difference between practice strength and match strength gradually narrows.

Kirihito identifies the mental component of Ozeki's wrestling as one of his greatest resources. Ozeki can endure discouragement and continue performing fundamentals under pressure, a trait that eventually lets him withstand opponents who expect the apparently timid captain to collapse.

After graduation, Ozeki becomes a professional sumo wrestler rather than leaving the sport behind. He deliberately joins Nagato Stable instead of Hinomaru's stable so that the two can eventually face one another in official competition. He later reaches the makuuchi division and earns a Fighting Spirit prize during the September tournament.

Ozeki begins as Oodachi's only active sumo club member. He has maintained the club through years of humiliation, but Yuuma's delinquent group has taken control of its practice space and destroyed the ring he painstakingly prepared.

Hinomaru's arrival changes the club immediately. After defeating Yuuma, Hinomaru restores access to the dojo and declares his intention to pursue national-level sumo from Oodachi. Ozeki goes from protecting a nearly empty club to captaining a team with a genuine chance to compete.

Recruiting enough members for team competition becomes a collective effort. Yuuma joins first, followed by Chihiro and Kei. Ozeki's role shifts accordingly: he must set an example for wrestlers who are newer to sumo but may possess greater athletic ability.

The team's early defeats are particularly significant for him because Ozeki has spent much of his life losing. Instead of treating another loss as confirmation that Oodachi cannot compete, he begins using it as information for the next tournament.

At the national Inter High, Ozeki becomes an essential part of Oodachi's championship run rather than merely the captain who brought stronger wrestlers together. His later decision to enter professional sumo confirms that the years spent losing were preparation rather than a failed school hobby.

Ushio Hinomaru is the teammate whose arrival saves Ozeki's club from collapse. Although Ushio Hinomaru is more accomplished competitively, he immediately recognizes Shinya Ozeki's authority as captain and respects the years of unseen work behind the dojo.

Yuuma Gojou initially causes Ozeki considerable pain by taking over the sumo club's space and destroying its ring. Yuuma Gojou's eventual decision to join the club creates an awkward relationship built partly around remorse, but Ozeki accepts his attempt to make amends.

Chihiro Kunisaki brings national-level wrestling experience and enormous confidence to Oodachi. Ozeki remains captain even when Chihiro Kunisaki is the more naturally gifted combat athlete.

Kei Mitsuhashi reminds Ozeki of what it means to enter competition without obvious advantages. Ozeki encourages Kei Mitsuhashi's persistence rather than comparing his small body to the club's heavier wrestlers.

Kirihito Tsuji becomes Oodachi's coach and identifies technical ways for Ozeki to turn his years of basic training into match results. Ozeki trusts Kirihito Tsuji's analysis even though Kirihito is younger.
