Personality
Personality
Chihiro is loud, competitive, eccentric, demanding, and supremely confident in his athletic ability. He treats combat sports as components of a larger personal project: becoming strong enough to excel in mixed martial arts rather than identifying permanently with one discipline.
His intensity drives other members away from Oodachi's wrestling club before he joins sumo. Chihiro expects anyone training with him to approach practice seriously and has little instinct for moderating standards to accommodate casual participants.
He is also highly adaptable. Losing to Hinomaru does not provoke excuses about incompatible rule sets; Chihiro recognizes that sumo exposed something missing from his own skill set and immediately decides it is worth learning.
Academically, he is the weakest member of Oodachi's sumo team, creating a sharp contrast between extraordinary physical intelligence and poor classroom performance. His instincts make complex throws appear natural even when he struggles with much simpler schoolwork.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Chihiro enters sumo as a national wrestling champion, giving him elite balance, grappling experience, explosive throws, takedown knowledge, and body control before learning formal sumo technique.
His principal advantage is natural talent. Chihiro can observe techniques and incorporate their underlying mechanics unusually quickly, making him dangerous even against wrestlers with far more years in the sport.
Wrestling gives him a distinctive throwing repertoire. He is comfortable changing levels, controlling an opponent's hips, manipulating their center of gravity, and continuing through positions where a traditional sumo wrestler might expect a different response.
He supplements that foundation by actively learning from other martial arts. Chihiro's goal of becoming a mixed martial artist encourages him to regard every opponent as a potential source of new technique rather than restricting himself to one school's doctrine.
His weakness is that talent can encourage overconfidence. Opponents with deeper sumo experience can exploit details he has not yet internalized, especially the highly specialized demands of tachiai, ring boundaries, mawashi fighting, and winning conditions different from wrestling.
Story Role
Story Role
Chihiro is introduced as Oodachi's national champion wrestler and the sole remaining member of its wrestling club because his training demands have driven everyone else away. The sumo club needs additional members, making him an obvious target for recruitment.
He initially sees little reason to join. His MMA ambition values breadth, however, and Hinomaru persuades him into a special contest in which both competitors can use the rules associated with their respective disciplines.
The resulting match changes his view of sumo. Rather than treating the loss as a detour from MMA, Chihiro recognizes that mastering sumo can make him a more complete fighter and joins Oodachi.
His rapid progress gives the club another genuine scoring threat. Unlike Kei, who must specialize around weakness, Chihiro enters with national-level athletic credentials and becomes dangerous almost immediately.
Chihiro's presence also introduces a theme that continues through his encounters with other crossover athletes: techniques from wrestling, karate, judo, and sumo can be transferred and reinterpreted rather than existing in isolated categories.
After his second year, Chihiro leaves Japan for the United States to pursue mixed martial arts. In the professional-era portion of the manga, he returns as the champion of a smaller MMA organization and as a father, having followed through on the ambition that originally brought him into cross-disciplinary training.
Relationships
Relationships
Ushio Hinomaru is the sumo wrestler who convinces Chihiro that the sport has value for his broader fighting ambitions. Their special match gives Chihiro Kunisaki one of the rare experiences of being decisively challenged by someone physically smaller.
Masato Hyoudou is Chihiro's older brother. Their parents separate when the brothers are young, leaving Masato Hyoudou to be raised by their father while Chihiro remains with their mother. Masato repeatedly takes up activities Chihiro practices, surpasses him, and then moves on, creating a complicated competitive dynamic.
Shinya Ozeki remains Chihiro's captain despite possessing less obvious athletic talent. Chihiro ultimately respects Shinya Ozeki's persistence and role within the team rather than challenging his authority.
Yuuma Gojou is another former non-sumo martial artist whose style develops from a different foundation. Yuuma Gojou's karate-based thrusting contrasts with Chihiro's wrestling throws.
Kei Mitsuhashi receives the nickname "Hotaru" from Chihiro. Although Kei Mitsuhashi lacks Chihiro's physical gifts, Chihiro comes to recognize the tactical value his smaller teammate brings to team competition.
Kirihito Tsuji becomes one of the few people capable of consistently identifying weaknesses in Chihiro's rapidly developing sumo. Kirihito Tsuji's technical analysis helps turn raw versatility into a style suited to organized competition.
