Kei Mitsuhashi

Kei is timid, polite, self-conscious, and highly aware of how poorly his physique matches conventional sumo. Unlike Hinomaru, whose small body contains exceptional strength and years of elite training, Kei begins with almost no compensating advantage.

What keeps him in the club is courage rather than confidence. Kei is frightened before major matches and knows that stronger opponents can defeat him quickly, yet he continues stepping onto the dohyo because he wants to contribute to the team that accepted him.

He is especially receptive to instruction. When Kirihito demonstrates how easily tactical movement can dismantle straightforward attacks, Kei absorbs the lesson faster than teammates who rely more heavily on established strengths.

His adaptability becomes a point of pride. Kei cannot dictate how every bout will proceed, so he studies opponents and accepts that winning may require methods that stronger wrestlers consider inelegant.

Kei lacks size, stamina, raw strength, and extensive sumo experience. These limitations force him toward a highly tactical style centered on feints, evasive positioning, timing, and manipulating an opponent's commitment to an attack.

His greatest weapon is adaptability. Kei pays close attention to Kirihito's instructions and can change his approach according to the specific wrestler he faces instead of trying to impose one universal style.

He often targets momentum. A much heavier opponent becomes dangerous once stable and advancing, so Kei tries to create the instant of imbalance before that pressure is fully established. A sidestep, hesitation, altered tachiai, or deliberately misleading movement can be enough to redirect an opponent beyond the ring.

Kei's tactics sometimes approach the boundaries of conventional expectations about honorable sumo, but they remain built around legal ways of compensating for a severe physical disadvantage. His growth demonstrates that strategic awareness itself can function as a competitive weapon.

Kei becomes important when Oodachi needs enough wrestlers to field a complete five-person team. He has watched Hinomaru and Chihiro's confrontation and is inspired by the possibility that someone can challenge physical disadvantages through technique and resolve.

Joining does not immediately make him competitive. Kei struggles badly in training and understands that his body cannot reproduce what Hinomaru, Yuuma, Ozeki, or Chihiro do naturally.

Kirihito's arrival provides him with the clearest route forward. The coach's emphasis on identifying individual strengths and weaknesses is particularly valuable for Kei because generic strength training would never close the size gap quickly enough.

Kei gradually becomes Oodachi's tactical wildcard. Opposing teams know he is the weakest wrestler on paper, but that knowledge itself creates opportunities: stronger opponents may underestimate him, overcommit, or become frustrated when he refuses to wrestle the match they expected.

By the end of Oodachi's national campaign, Kei has contributed victories and tactical pressure despite remaining physically undersized. Later material shows him considerably more socially confident than the nervous novice who first joined the club.

Ushio Hinomaru inspires Kei to attempt sumo despite his physique. Watching Ushio Hinomaru challenge larger and highly trained opponents gives him evidence that physical disadvantage does not automatically make participation meaningless.

Chihiro Kunisaki gives Kei the nickname "Hotaru." Chihiro Kunisaki's extreme athletic confidence contrasts with Kei's insecurity, but both are relative newcomers to sumo and learn to adapt experience from outside traditional training.

Kirihito Tsuji becomes the coach most responsible for turning Kei's limitations into an actual style. Kei responds quickly to Kirihito Tsuji's tactical demonstrations and becomes one of his most obedient students.

Shinya Ozeki understands better than most teammates what it means to persist without immediate victories. Shinya Ozeki's acceptance helps Kei remain part of the club during his weakest period.

Yuuma Gojou and Kei occupy opposite physical positions within Oodachi: Yuuma begins with size and combat experience, while Kei has almost neither. Their eventual ability to function as equal teammates reflects how dramatically Yuuma's attitude toward weaker students has changed.
