Personality
Personality
Yuuma initially presents himself as aggressive, proud, dismissive, and accustomed to solving disputes through intimidation. His reputation as Oodachi's strongest student allows him to dominate classmates, while his expulsion from karate removes the disciplined environment that once gave his strength direction.
Hinomaru's victory affects him because it cannot be explained away as luck. Yuuma confronts someone much smaller who defeats him through a sport he had mocked, and his pride gradually turns from humiliation into curiosity.
Remorse toward Ozeki becomes one of his strongest motivations. Yuuma understands that joining the club does not erase the damage he caused, particularly the destruction of a ring Ozeki built by hand. His improvement therefore becomes partly an attempt to repay someone he had treated cruelly.
Despite his delinquent image, Yuuma is academically capable and ranks highly within his grade. His intelligence appears in sumo as he learns to convert karate timing and striking mechanics into legal pushing techniques rather than simply charging forward.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yuuma enters sumo with substantial combat experience. As a former regional karate champion, he already possesses strong legs, trained hips, explosive movement, distance management, and an understanding of how to transfer force through strikes.
His natural sumo style becomes oshi-zumou, emphasizing thrusting and pushing rather than prolonged mawashi grappling. Karate gives him unusually precise control over palm strikes and forward pressure, allowing him to attack an opponent's posture repeatedly without needing an inside grip.
Yuuma's original karate instructor eventually helps him adapt martial-arts principles for sumo after recognizing that he has genuinely reformed. This allows him to combine the discipline of his former sport with techniques appropriate to the dohyo rather than treating karate and sumo as incompatible.
He remains less technically experienced in sumo than Hinomaru or Ozeki, especially early on. His development therefore depends on learning the specialized footwork, tachiai, ring awareness, and legal limitations that distinguish sumo from an unrestricted fight.
Story Role
Story Role
Yuuma is one of the first obstacles Hinomaru encounters at Oodachi. His gang has seized the sumo club's dojo, and their destruction of Ozeki's ring establishes how thoroughly the club has been marginalized within the school.
Hinomaru defeats Yuuma and reclaims the space. Yuuma later becomes exposed to stronger competitive wrestlers and realizes that sumo contains a level of strength he had never encountered through school fights.
He joins Oodachi's team in part to test himself and in part to atone. His presence gives the club a third wrestler for early team competition and creates a useful contrast with Hinomaru: Yuuma is taller and comes from a striking discipline, while Hinomaru relies on compact grappling and traditional sumo experience.
Kirihito's coaching helps Yuuma stop treating strength as sufficient by itself. Technical refinement makes his thrusting attacks less predictable and teaches him how to control an opponent instead of simply overwhelming weaker people.
After graduating from Oodachi, Yuuma continues sumo at university rather than entering the professional ranks immediately. During the manga's later period, he is also studying medicine and training under a doctor, showing that his future develops beyond the delinquent identity that defined his introduction.
Relationships
Relationships
Ushio Hinomaru begins as the much smaller newcomer who humiliates Yuuma in a fight. Rather than remaining enemies, Ushio Hinomaru becomes the person who introduces him to an arena where strength has structure, discipline, and purpose.
Shinya Ozeki is the teammate toward whom Yuuma carries the greatest guilt. Having bullied Shinya Ozeki and participated in the destruction of his dohyo, Yuuma treats becoming useful to the club as part of making amends.
Reina Gojou is Yuuma's younger sister. Reina Gojou initially shares some of his disdain for sumo, but her involvement with the club increases after Yuuma becomes one of its wrestlers.
Chihiro Kunisaki is another combat-sport convert whose natural ability creates a competitive atmosphere within Oodachi. Chihiro Kunisaki's wrestling background contrasts with Yuuma's karate-based thrusting.
Kei Mitsuhashi lacks Yuuma's size and established martial experience, but Yuuma eventually treats him as a genuine teammate rather than the kind of weaker student his old delinquent group would have dismissed.
Kirihito Tsuji identifies the technical refinements Yuuma needs to become an effective sumo wrestler. Yuuma submits to Kirihito Tsuji's training despite the coach being younger and physically unable to sustain long matches.
