Ushio Hinomaru

Hinomaru is straightforward, passionate, disciplined, and almost completely consumed by sumo. He approaches training with an intensity that can appear excessive even to experienced wrestlers, but he does not expect teammates to succeed through enthusiasm alone. He respects hard work, technical improvement, and the willingness to confront one's weaknesses honestly.

Confidence is central to his wrestling identity. Hinomaru knows exactly how severely his height disadvantages him, yet he refuses to adopt a style built around avoiding larger opponents. Instead, he insists on "yokozuna sumo": meeting an opponent directly, seizing control, and winning through superior balance, technique, strength, and spirit. His commitment can inspire others, but it also produces a dangerous disregard for his own physical limits.

He is generous toward opponents who take sumo seriously. Defeat rarely makes him resentful; strong rivals instead become evidence that he still has something worthwhile to pursue. That attitude helps change Yuuma Gojou, attracts Chihiro Kunisaki to the club, and gives Shinya Ozeki renewed confidence after years without an official victory.

Hinomaru's small stature gives him a dramatically lower center of gravity than most heavyweight wrestlers. Years of conditioning turn that disadvantage into a weapon: he can drive upward from beneath larger opponents' balance points, maintain strong footing against heavier bodies, and enter positions taller wrestlers find difficult to defend.

His sumo is deliberately direct. Rather than relying principally on evasive footwork, he prefers powerful tachiai, inside positioning, throws, and techniques that allow him to defeat an opponent from close range. His best-known finishing technique is the Demon Wheel, a right-handed underarm throw associated with his Onimaru Kunitsuna identity.

Hinomaru's physical strength is exceptional relative to his size, but technique is what allows that strength to matter. His experience includes years of elementary-school competition followed by intensive training during his absence from tournaments. He can rapidly analyze weight distribution, grip positioning, momentum, and the instant an opponent's stance begins to collapse.

He also has extraordinary competitive endurance. Hinomaru continues fighting through injuries and exhaustion that would make most wrestlers withdraw, although this becomes one of his most serious weaknesses. Kirihito Tsuji and his coaches repeatedly have to distinguish productive toughness from simply damaging his body.

After high school, Hinomaru enters professional sumo through a special qualification earned from his amateur results, bypassing the ordinary height restriction. Wrestling professionally as Onimaru Kunitsuna, he develops his techniques against the National Treasure generation and established sekitori rather than abandoning the style that defined him in school.

Hinomaru arrives at Oodachi by accident while originally searching for a stronger school with an established sumo program. Instead he finds Ozeki maintaining the school's club almost entirely alone while Yuuma and his delinquent friends have occupied its dojo. Hinomaru defeats Yuuma and helps reclaim the ring, giving Ozeki the first genuine teammate he has had in years.

The club's survival becomes his first major objective. Oodachi needs enough wrestlers for team competition, which leads Hinomaru and Ozeki to recruit Yuuma, Chihiro, and Kei Mitsuhashi. Their different backgrounds—karate, wrestling, complete inexperience, and traditional sumo—force the team to become stronger through contrasting styles rather than a single training philosophy.

Hinomaru's personal ambition intersects with the emergence of the National Treasures, elite wrestlers of his generation whose titles derive from famous Japanese swords. Sada Mizuki, Tennoji Shidou, and Kuze Sousuke each represent obstacles to the national-level accomplishment Hinomaru needs.

Kirihito's arrival changes his development substantially. Instead of simply training harder, Hinomaru is forced to refine weaknesses and work within a team strategy. Training with professional wrestlers at Shibakiyama Stable and later encountering former yokozuna Shunkai Tokio broaden his understanding of how much separates exceptional high-school sumo from the professional level.

Oodachi ultimately reaches the Inter High national team competition and defeats the strongest schools in the country, while Hinomaru's amateur results create a route into professional sumo despite his height. The manga's second major period follows him years later as a professional wrestler attempting to climb through the top division and challenge yokozuna Jin'ou.

Shinya Ozeki is the captain Hinomaru meets when Oodachi's club is on the verge of disappearing. Hinomaru immediately respects Shinya Ozeki's years of solitary work maintaining the dojo and treats him as captain despite quickly becoming the team's strongest wrestler.

Yuuma Gojou begins as the delinquent who has taken over Oodachi's sumo dojo. Hinomaru defeats Yuuma Gojou decisively, but rather than simply humiliating him, exposes him to serious sumo competition. Yuuma eventually joins the club and becomes one of Hinomaru's most dependable teammates.

Chihiro Kunisaki initially challenges Hinomaru as a national wrestling champion seeking to master multiple combat sports. Their mixed-rules match convinces Chihiro Kunisaki that sumo offers enough technical depth to deserve his attention.

Kei Mitsuhashi joins after becoming inspired by Hinomaru's match with Chihiro. Hinomaru never dismisses Kei Mitsuhashi for being even less physically suited to sumo than himself and supports his development toward a tactical style.

Kirihito Tsuji is Hinomaru's childhood friend and former training rival. When illness makes extended competition impossible for Kirihito Tsuji, he returns as Oodachi's coach and uses his technical knowledge to help Hinomaru compensate for weaknesses that determination alone cannot solve.

Reina Gojou initially considers sumo strange and becomes involved with the club largely because of her brother. She later becomes one of its managers and grows increasingly close to Hinomaru. Their relationship becomes romantic during his professional career, and Hinomaru publicly proposes marriage during the September tournament.

Kuze Sousuke is one of Hinomaru's most formidable generational rivals, possessing the size, lineage, and natural ability that Hinomaru lacks. Tennoji Shidou represents another standard Hinomaru must surpass, combining the technical experience of a formerly small wrestler with the large physique he eventually develops.
