Shigure Souma

Shigure is playful, intelligent and deliberately difficult to pin down. He enjoys teasing the younger members of his household and tormenting his editor with missed deadlines, often presenting himself as an irresponsible adult who would rather lounge around in a kimono than work.

Behind that demeanor, Shigure is extremely perceptive and capable of calculated manipulation. He understands the emotional weaknesses of the people around him and is willing to let situations become painful if he believes the outcome will advance what he wants.

He is unusually candid about his own moral shortcomings when pressed. Shigure does not consider himself particularly kind, even though he can provide genuine advice, shelter and support.

As the Dog of the Zodiac, Shigure transforms into a dog when the curse is triggered. His animal form is relatively large and retains his characteristic calm demeanor.

Shigure's more consequential abilities are intellectual and social. He reads people accurately, withholds information strategically and can influence events without appearing to participate directly.

He is also a successful professional writer who publishes both literary work and material under the pen name Noa Kiritani. His productivity is frequently obscured by the games he plays with his long-suffering editor, Mitsuru.

Shigure provides the house in which much of the story's early domestic life occurs. By allowing Tooru to stay and accepting Kyou into the household, he creates an environment outside the main estate where several cursed Soumas can interact more freely.

His position is not entirely altruistic. Shigure possesses information about the curse and the Souma family that he deliberately withholds, and he watches Tooru's growing influence with more calculation than his carefree manner initially suggests.

Shigure is ultimately revealed to have been pursuing his own long-term desire involving Akito, using Tooru and changing relationships among the Zodiac members as part of a strategy to break the stagnant bond surrounding the family.

Tooru Honda lives in Shigure's house under his protection. He genuinely cares for Tooru Honda, but he also admits that he has used her presence to advance his own objectives.

Yuki Souma lives with Shigure after leaving the main estate, giving him greater distance from the environment associated with his childhood trauma.

Kyou Souma becomes the third young resident of Shigure's household and a frequent target of his teasing.

Hatori Souma and Ayame Souma are Shigure's closest friends from childhood, forming a longstanding trio among the older Zodiac members.

Akito Souma has an exceptionally complicated bond with Shigure. His love, jealousy and resentment toward Akito drive much of the manipulation he conceals beneath his carefree behavior.

Mitsuru is Shigure's editor and frequent victim of his habit of delaying or hiding manuscripts.
