Nat

Nat was born at Grace Field on December 18, 2036 and transferred to Plantation 3 as an infant. He grew up under the care of Isabella, believing that the plantation was an ordinary orphanage and regarding its other children as his siblings. Like the others, he wore a white uniform and carried the identification number 30294 on the left side of his neck.

Music was part of Nat’s life before he learned the truth about Grace Field. He enjoyed playing the piano for his siblings and also demonstrated an ability to play the accordion. During Norman’s eleventh-birthday celebration, Nat led the children in performing a birthday song, reflecting both his musical confidence and his affection for the family.

Nat was not included in the escape conspiracy at its earliest stage. Don and Gilda later brought him, Anna, Thoma, and Lannion into the plan by allowing them to overhear a conversation involving Emma, Norman, and Sister Krone. This exposed the children to the truth that Grace Field was a farm raising them as food for demons.

Nat is cheerful, sociable, and somewhat vain. He takes particular pride in his prominent nose and reacts strongly when others insult it, a trait that later inspires Yugo to call him “Nose.” His self-regard is usually harmless and lends him a theatrical quality, especially when he performs music for the other children.

Official character material describes Nat as cautious and cowardly. He is easily frightened by unfamiliar places and dangerous situations, and he does not possess Emma’s instinctive willingness to rush toward a threat. At Grace Field House, he wears the plantation’s standard white button-up shirt and white trousers with brown boots. His tidy appearance complements his proud and occasionally self-conscious manner, particularly his attachment to his nose as a distinguishing feature.

Following the escape, Nat’s clothing becomes more practical. By 2047, he wears dark trousers with a long-sleeved white shirt and has grown to 142 cm. His hair also becomes longer and less carefully arranged, visually reflecting the harsher conditions outside the orphanage.

By 2049, Nat is thirteen years old and 156 cm tall. His later design preserves his recognizable facial features while showing the significant growth that occurs during the children’s years away from Grace Field.

Nat has no supernatural powers. His abilities are those of a resourceful child who receives practical survival instruction after escaping Grace Field. He learns to travel quietly, follow group plans, live within concealed shelters, and respond to emergencies under the direction of the older children.

His most distinctive talent is music. Nat plays the piano and can perform on the accordion, using music both for entertainment and for family celebrations. This skill distinguishes him from many of the other younger escapees and gives him a valued role during peaceful moments.

Nat is not among the group’s principal strategists or fighters. His physical ability, academic performance, and composure under pressure do not match those of Emma, Norman, or Ray. He instead contributes through cooperation, adherence to instructions, and his growing capacity to endure prolonged danger.

Years outside Grace Field improve Nat’s adaptability. He becomes capable of participating in coordinated movements across demon territory and surviving repeated displacements, even though the story never presents him as a specialist in weapons or combat.

Emma — Nat regards Emma as an older sister and follows her leadership during the escape from Grace Field. Her determination creates the possibility of freedom for the younger children, while Nat’s safety remains part of her insistence that no sibling be abandoned.

Norman — Norman is one of Nat’s admired older brothers. Nat helps celebrate his eleventh birthday by leading a musical performance, and Norman’s planning is instrumental in preparing the children for their escape.

Ray — Ray acts as one of the group’s senior planners and protectors. Nat relies on his judgment outside Grace Field, even when Ray’s guarded manner differs sharply from Nat’s more expressive personality.

Don — Don helps bring Nat into the escape plan once the older children decide that more of their siblings must understand the danger. He later serves as one of the dependable older figures responsible for protecting the younger escapees.

Gilda — Gilda participates in revealing Grace Field’s secret to Nat and helps supervise the younger children after the escape. Her caution and organizational ability make her particularly important to children who are not prepared for direct combat.

Anna — Anna is close to Nat in age and is inducted into the escape plan alongside him. They remain members of the same traveling group and share the transition from protected plantation life to survival beyond the walls.

Thoma and Lannion — Thoma and Lannion learn the truth at the same stage as Nat. The three boys frequently appear together among the younger Grace Field escapees and share many of the group’s daily duties.

Isabella — Isabella raises Nat as his “Mama” at Plantation 3. He initially trusts her as a caregiver, making the discovery of her role in the farm system a profound betrayal of the family structure he had always known.

Yugo — Yugo initially assigns Nat the mocking nickname “Nose.” Despite his abrasive treatment of the Grace Field children, he becomes an important source of survival knowledge during their time beyond the plantation.

Nat initially appears as part of the large family whose happiness gives Grace Field its convincing outward appearance. His presence helps establish that Emma and the other leaders are not planning solely for themselves: any escape must account for children of varied ages, temperaments, and abilities.

Once informed of the farm’s true purpose, Nat participates in the preparations for departure. He escapes Plantation 3 with fourteen other children while the youngest siblings remain behind under a longer-term rescue plan. His inclusion demonstrates the older children’s success in coordinating a group much larger than the farm authorities expected.

Outside Grace Field, Nat remains with the children based at Shelter B06-32 while Emma and other fighters confront threats elsewhere. He survives the destruction of safe locations, movements through demon territory, and the pursuit of forces connected to the plantations. Although rarely the focus of a battle, his continued survival remains one measure of whether the leaders’ plans are protecting the family as intended.

Nat later participates in the broader effort to reunite the Grace Field children and reach a world where they will no longer be treated as livestock. He crosses into the Human World with the other survivors and begins a new life there, eventually joining the search for the missing Emma.

Nat begins the story as a protected child whose greatest concerns involve ordinary household life, music, and his own appearance. Discovering Grace Field’s purpose removes that security at once. Unlike the older planners, he has little time to process the revelation before being asked to trust them with his life.

His cautious nature does not disappear after the escape. Instead, he learns to function alongside it. Each relocation requires him to leave behind another approximation of home, yet he continues helping the group preserve routines and relationships that prevent survival from becoming their only identity.

The visible changes in Nat’s height, clothing, and hair accompany this emotional growth. By adolescence, he has spent years responding to dangers that his younger self could scarcely imagine. He never becomes a central warrior or strategist, but he matures into a reliable member of the family rather than remaining merely someone the older children must protect.

After reaching the Human World, Nat’s participation in the search for Emma confirms that his loyalty has become active and reciprocal. The child once carried through an escape now helps pursue the sibling whose decisions made his freedom possible.

Nat continues traveling with the escaped children, but several locations, conflicts, and characters associated with their manga journey are removed. Consequently, much of his shelter-era material is either shortened or placed within anime-original sequences.

Nat also appears in The Parodied Jokeland, the franchise’s comedy spin-off, where character traits from the main series are exaggerated for humor. His musical interests, vanity, and place among the Grace Field siblings provide material for this lighter portrayal.
