Messhi Kuguhara

Kuguhara takes teaching seriously and approaches his students from an adult perspective rather than indulging everything they want. When the Student Council struggles with the prospect of saying goodbye to Medaka, he tells them that accepting separation is something they need to learn.

His relationship with Medaka is more personal than his limited manga appearances initially suggest. As her homeroom teacher, he has spent considerable time talking with her in an otherwise nearly empty classroom and has learned from her as much as he believes she has learned from him.

Kuguhara is direct without being unsympathetic. He understands why Medaka's friends want to keep her close, but does not believe that affection gives them the right to prevent her from moving forward.

No Abnormality, Minus or Style is established for Kuguhara. His abilities are professional rather than supernatural.

He teaches Japanese history, advises the Student Council and handles the unusual responsibility of serving as homeroom teacher for Class 13, whose Abnormal students generally have little need to attend ordinary lessons.

Kuguhara's background is explored more extensively in supplementary novel material, including his time teaching Medaka. Their conversations play a part in Medaka's decision to pursue the Student Council presidency.

He enters the main manga near the end of Medaka's school career, interrupting the Student Council while its members consider how to convince her to remain at Hakoniwa. He tells them they should learn to accept her departure instead of trying to force her to stay.

Kuguhara later joins Hakama, Kajiki and the other adults during Medaka's 100 Flowers Run. His farewell message is that he learned a great deal from her, reversing the conventional teacher-student relationship in a way that reflects their years of conversation.

Medaka Kurokami is Kuguhara's student and the only member of his Class 13 homeroom who regularly attends class. Their frequent conversations give Messhi Kuguhara no need for a self-link; Kuguhara comes to know Medaka Kurokami personally rather than only through her reputation.

Hakama Shiranui is Hakoniwa Academy's chairman and joins Kuguhara and the other adults during Medaka's final school challenge.

Kajiki Kurokami is another adult waiting with Kuguhara during the 100 Flowers Run.

Richigi Eburi is a fellow Hakoniwa Academy teacher and counselor who participates with the faculty in Medaka's farewell.
