Hakama Shiranui

Hakama is outwardly cheerful, congenial and fond of jokes. He speaks casually even with dangerous Abnormals and rarely allows threatening circumstances to erase his smile.

Behind that friendliness is a calculating administrator. Hakama is willing to use students as experimental subjects and to let dangerous individuals act freely when their actions advance his objectives or keep other threats occupied.

His behavior toward Hansode is noticeably warmer. He treats his granddaughter like a much younger child, but he does not dismiss her intelligence and is willing to listen when she offers useful advice.

Hakama is not primarily presented as a frontline fighter. His greatest demonstrated strengths are his knowledge, planning and institutional control over Hakoniwa Academy and the Flask Plan.

As coordinator, he has extensive knowledge of Abnormals, Class 13 and the underground research facility. He can mobilize the academy's resources and manipulate the structure of the Flask Plan around its participants.

Hakama's connection to the Shiranui Household also gives his role another dimension: he belongs to the family whose members have historically served as doubles for extraordinary people.

Hakama oversees the Flask Plan and recruits Medaka into it after recognizing the extraordinary potential of The End. Rather than simply opposing her, he sees her as potentially invaluable to the project's goal of understanding and reproducing Abnormality.

He repeatedly manipulates events from the chairman's position, including his handling of Kumagawa's return to Hakoniwa. His plans make him one of the adults most responsible for the conflicts Medaka's Student Council encounters during the Flask Plan period.

Hakama is eventually revealed to have his own place within the Shiranui system: he serves as Kajiki Kurokami's double. His family connection also helps explain why Hansode has been positioned near Medaka.

Hansode Shiranui is Hakama's granddaughter. Hakama is openly affectionate toward Hansode Shiranui while also respecting her intelligence and usefulness.

Medaka Kurokami is central to Hakama's ambitions for the Flask Plan. He views Medaka Kurokami's ability to perfect other skills as potentially transformative for the project.

Misogi Kumagawa is an unpredictable threat Hakama is willing to exploit rather than confront straightforwardly.

Kajiki Kurokami is connected to Hakama through Hakama's role as Kajiki's Shiranui double.

Hanhaba Shiranui and Hanten Shiranui are Hakama's relatives within the Shiranui family.
