Kenji Fujima

Fujima has two noticeably different competitive modes. Away from active play, he is calm, courteous and analytical, handling the responsibilities of a coach with maturity unusual for a high-school student.

Once he enters a game, his demeanor becomes much more aggressive. Fujima plays with confidence, speed and emotional intensity, willingly taking risks that contrast with his measured sideline decision-making.

His teammates hold him in extraordinary respect. Rather than resenting his authority as a fellow student, they treat his presence as the team's central source of confidence. Even seeing Fujima prepare to enter a game can raise Shoyo's intensity.

Fujima is also competitive without being needlessly antagonistic. His rivalry with Maki is built around years of competing near the top of Kanagawa basketball, and each understands the other's ability.

Fujima is an elite point guard whose greatest strengths are speed, passing, ball handling and control of offensive tempo. His entrance can immediately transform Shoyo from a methodical team into a faster and more dangerous attack.

He is a skilled scorer as well as a distributor. His quickness allows him to penetrate defenses, while his shooting forces opponents to respect him away from the basket.

Fujima's court vision allows him to exploit Shoyo's exceptional size. With Toru Hanagata, Kazushi Hasegawa, Mitsuru Nagano and Shoichi Takano around him, he can distribute to multiple tall targets while remaining a scoring threat himself.

His most unusual ability is strategic rather than physical: Fujima must analyze opponents as a coach while preserving enough mental and physical readiness to enter and execute his own plan.

Fujima initially remains on the bench during Shoyo's elimination game against Shohoku. Shoyo expects its enormous starting lineup to handle the comparatively unheralded opponent without requiring its player-coach.

As Shohoku closes the gap, Fujima recognizes that the situation has changed and enters. His appearance immediately raises Shoyo's pace and confidence, forcing Ryota Miyagi into a direct matchup with one of the prefecture's premier point guards.

Shohoku survives Shoyo's resurgence and wins 62–60, eliminating Fujima's team before the final league. The defeat is especially painful because Fujima's dual role means Shoyo loses both its on-court leader and the strategist responsible for deciding when that leader should play.

Fujima remains interested in the national tournament afterward. His previous experience against Toyotama also gives him direct knowledge of the aggressive Osaka team Shohoku later encounters.

Shinichi Maki is Fujima's defining rival. Both are veteran point guards and team leaders who have competed near the top of Kanagawa basketball, although Maki's Kainan has maintained the stronger record.

Toru Hanagata is one of Fujima's most important teammates and provides Shoyo with an elite center whose technical interior play complements Fujima's passing.

Kazushi Hasegawa, Mitsuru Nagano, Shoichi Takano and Taku Itou play under Fujima's leadership at Shoyo.

Ryota Miyagi becomes Fujima's direct point-guard opponent during the Shohoku-Shoyo game. Miyagi's speed makes the matchup competitive despite Fujima's greater reputation.

Hanamichi Sakuragi initially mistakes Fujima for an ordinary bench player, failing to understand why Shoyo and the crowd react so strongly when he prepares to enter.

Hisashi Mitsui and Kaede Rukawa are among the Shohoku scorers Fujima must account for once he assumes control of Shoyo on court.
