Mitsuru Nagano

Nagano receives limited individual characterization, but his play reflects Shoyo's disciplined team identity. He follows the team's defensive structure and uses his physical attributes in coordination with the other tall starters.

He does not seek the spotlight occupied by Fujima or Hanagata. His role depends more on executing assignments and making Shoyo's collective size difficult to attack.

Nagano is primarily distinguished as a defender. At 191 cm, he gives Shoyo exceptional length on the perimeter and can interfere with passing lanes that would remain open against a more conventionally sized forward.

Taoka specifically recognizes Shoyo's height as a defensive problem, and Nagano is part of the wall of long defenders that restricts Shohoku's normal passing options.

His individual offensive ability receives much less attention. Shoyo's attack relies more heavily on Hanagata and eventually Fujima, leaving Nagano to contribute through positioning, defense and supporting play.

Nagano starts in Shoyo's elimination game against Shohoku. Shoyo's enormous lineup initially creates serious problems because Shohoku cannot make routine passes over defenders who are tall at nearly every position.

His presence contributes to the tactical challenge that forces Shohoku to rely on speed, rebounding and individual breakthroughs rather than comfortable half-court execution.

Shohoku eventually overturns Shoyo's advantages, with Sakuragi's rebounding becoming particularly important. Shoyo loses narrowly and is eliminated from the tournament.

Kenji Fujima is Nagano's captain and player-coach, directing Shoyo from the bench before entering the Shohoku game himself.

Toru Hanagata is Shoyo's starting center and one of the principal offensive players Nagano supports.

Kazushi Hasegawa and Shoichi Takano are fellow third-year starters whose height combines with Nagano's to define Shoyo's lineup.

Taku Ito starts at point guard while Kenji Fujima remains on the bench.
