Toru Hanagata

Hanagata is intelligent, composed and dependable. His leadership style is quieter than Akagi's forceful captaincy, but his teammates listen to him when Fujima is not on the floor.

He takes opponents seriously and adjusts rather than relying solely on his height. That temperament matches his playing style: Hanagata prefers technique and timing to simply overpowering defenders.

His composure is tested by Sakuragi, whose unconventional rebounding and unpredictable movement create problems that established high-school experience does not always solve.

Hanagata is a technically refined center whose signature weapon is a fadeaway jump shot. By leaning away from the defender during release, he creates separation that makes the shot extremely difficult for conventional centers to block.

He is unusually agile for a 197 cm player and can score away from the immediate basket area. His footwork gives Shoyo a different interior threat from the physically dominant styles used by Akagi and Uozumi.

Hanagata also rebounds effectively and uses his height within Shoyo's exceptionally tall lineup. Against Sakuragi, however, he discovers that superior technique and size do not guarantee control of the boards against extraordinary jumping ability.

Hanagata serves as Shoyo's principal interior player during its elimination game against Shohoku. With Fujima beginning the match on the bench, Hanagata also functions as the team's on-court leader.

His duel with Akagi establishes the game as a confrontation between two of Kanagawa's premier centers. Hanagata's finesse creates difficulties for Akagi, while Shohoku's captain answers with greater physical force.

Sakuragi later becomes increasingly important around the basket. Sakuragi's rebounding helps Shohoku overcome Shoyo's enormous height advantage, and Shoyo is eliminated in a narrow defeat despite Fujima eventually entering the game.

Kenji Fujima is Hanagata's captain, player-coach and trusted teammate. Hanagata assumes much of the floor leadership while Fujima remains on the bench.

Takenori Akagi is Hanagata's principal positional rival during Shoyo's game against Shohoku.

Hanamichi Sakuragi challenges Hanagata's control of the boards with superior jumping ability and relentless rebounding.

Kazushi Hasegawa, Mitsuru Nagano, Shoichi Takano and Taku Ito complete Shoyo's major rotation around Hanagata and Fujima.
