Shinichi Maki

Maki is composed, authoritative and intensely competitive. His teammates respond to his directions immediately, reflecting both his position as captain and the confidence they place in his judgment.

He does not need to demean opponents to establish superiority. Maki takes dangerous players seriously and adapts quickly when an unfamiliar threat emerges. Sakuragi initially looks like an inexperienced liability, but Maki recognizes that his rebounding and athleticism can alter the game.

Maki can be stern with Kiyota, whose impulsive behavior frequently requires correction. Away from those moments, however, he is less severe than his imposing appearance suggests and is capable of dry humor.

Maki is an elite power point guard. His combination of acceleration, strength and body control allows him to drive directly into crowded areas and finish despite contact.

Stopping his penetration often requires multiple defenders. This creates openings for teammates, making Maki dangerous even when he does not take the final shot. His ability to draw defenders is central to Kainan's offense.

He is also a strong defender capable of handling multiple types of opponents. His physicality gives smaller guards difficulty, while his speed and experience prevent larger players from simply overpowering him.

Maki's court vision and leadership distinguish him from a pure scorer. He reads momentum, understands mismatches and maintains Kainan's organization in close games.

Maki first becomes a major benchmark for Shohoku during the prefectural tournament. Kainan has represented Kanagawa at the national tournament for years, and its captain embodies the standard Shohoku must challenge.

Against Shohoku, Maki repeatedly attacks the basket and forces unusual defensive responses. His ability to draw several defenders creates scoring opportunities for Kainan's shooters, while his physicality makes conventional one-on-one coverage unreliable.

His rivalry with Kenji Fujima helps establish his standing in Kanagawa. The two are recognized as the prefecture's premier point guards, though Kainan's continued success gives Maki the stronger competitive record.

Kainan defeats Shohoku and ultimately finishes first in the prefectural final league, with Shohoku qualifying alongside it. At the national tournament, Kainan advances all the way to the championship game and finishes as national runner-up.

Kenji Fujima is Maki's longstanding point-guard rival and one of the few Kanagawa players regularly discussed on his level.

Nobunaga Kiyota is Maki's younger teammate. Maki frequently disciplines his impulsiveness while trusting his athletic ability.

Soichiro Jin is one of Maki's most important offensive partners, benefiting from the defensive attention Maki creates through penetration.

Riki Takasago and Tadashi Mutou are senior teammates who provide experience around Kainan's captain.

Hanamichi Sakuragi initially treats Maki irreverently, but their confrontation demonstrates how rapidly Sakuragi is becoming relevant against elite opposition.
