Kanou

Kanou is sociable, competitive and concerned with his division’s reputation. He dislikes performing menial work for other squads and wants the Third Division to earn greater recognition through successful missions.

Although susceptible to group enthusiasm, he can be cautious. He initially advises his comrades not to confront unseen Menos without their captain, but later follows Kibune when promised an opportunity to prove the division’s strength.

Kanou is trained in standard Shinigami combat and can cooperate with other squad members against Gillian-class Menos. During a mission in the Dangai, he helps destroy one of the first Hollows encountered by the division.

He carries a Zanpakutō, but its name and release are not revealed. No seated rank, Bankai or individual named technique is established.

Kanou is among the Third Division members who greet Shūsuke Amagai and attend his strained welcoming party. His opinion improves after Amagai protects the squad from the Kōtotsu and introduces training designed around coordinated movement.

He later helps direct the Tenth Division during a simulated Menos invasion, demonstrating the value of Amagai’s joint-training proposal. When Makoto Kibune is exposed as a traitor, Kanou follows orders to support Izuru Kira rather than joining the conspiracy.

Shūsuke Amagai is Kanou’s anime-only captain and earns his respect through concern for the squad. Izuru Kira is his lieutenant.

Aida and Inose are Kanou’s closest on-screen squadmates. Makoto Kibune initially inspires the group but is later revealed as their enemy, while Rangiku Matsumoto receives Kanou’s assistance during the joint operation.
