Shuusuke Amagai

Amagai presents himself as humble, sociable and committed to rebuilding the Third Division’s reputation through ordinary service. He promotes cooperation between divisions and treats lower-ranking personnel with unusual informality.

He has an extremely low tolerance for alcohol and collapses after a single drink. Beneath his friendly public manner, however, he conceals a patient obsession with avenging his father.

Raika releases with the command “Sever,” becoming a hooked, heated blade capable of projecting fireballs, flame waves and fissures. Its Bankai, Raika Gōen Kaku, enlarges the weapon and greatly increases the scale and intensity of its flames.

Amagai’s Bakkōtō first resembles a tuning fork and later develops into a dragonlike gauntlet. It can sever Soul Reapers from their spiritual power and suppress active Zanpakutō abilities. Hollow power bypasses this effect, and excessive use ordinarily causes a Bakkōtō to consume its wielder.

Amagai arrives with Makoto Kibune and reorganizes the demoralized Third Division. He later assists Ichigo Kurosaki in exposing the conspiracy surrounding Rurichiyo Kasumiouji, apparently acting as a trustworthy ally.

Amagai is revealed as the architect behind the unrest. He joined the Gotei 13 to kill Genryuusai Shigekuni Yamamoto, whom he blamed for his father Shin’etsu Kisaragi’s death. After learning that a Bakkōtō-controlled Kisaragi had forced Yamamoto to kill him, Amagai recognizes his mistake and takes his own life with Raika’s flames.

Shin'etsu Kisaragi is Amagai’s father, whose death drives his revenge. Genryuusai Shigekuni Yamamoto is the commander Amagai intends to assassinate before learning the truth.

Izuru Kira serves as Amagai’s lieutenant and supports his public reforms. Makoto Kibune is his planted Third Seat and co-conspirator.

Rurichiyo Kasumiouji is initially presented as someone Amagai protects but later becomes his hostage. Ichigo Kurosaki exposes and defeats him.
