Makarov Dreyar

Makarov is affectionate, eccentric, stubborn, and deeply protective. He frequently complains about the enormous repair bills and disciplinary notices created by Fairy Tail's destructive members, yet he defends their freedom against authorities who would reduce the guild to rigid obedience.

He believes a guild should function as a family rather than simply an organization for accepting jobs. Makarov encourages members to follow their consciences, values emotional bonds over status, and will place himself in extreme danger if doing so protects Fairy Tail.

His relaxed behavior disappears when his "children" are threatened. Enemies who target the guild as a whole often encounter a far more imposing side of the old master than his everyday antics suggest.

Makarov possesses enormous magical power befitting a Wizard Saint. His signature Giant magic allows him to enlarge individual limbs or transform his whole body into a towering giant capable of physically overwhelming large opponents.

He also uses Light Magic, elemental spells, defensive seals, telepathy, Requip, and advanced formations such as Amaterasu. His breadth of magical knowledge reflects decades of experience rather than dependence on a single specialty.

Makarov's most famous spell is Fairy Law, one of Fairy Tail's Three Great Fairy Magics. It releases a vast light that attacks everyone the caster sincerely regards as an enemy while leaving allies unharmed. The scale of the spell makes it extraordinarily powerful but potentially dangerous to the caster when used against very large numbers of targets.

Makarov is Fairy Tail's institutional and emotional center during much of the series. He welcomes Lucy into the guild, manages disputes among its members, deals with the Magic Council, and repeatedly allows teams such as Natsu Dragneel's to operate with far more independence than most guild masters would tolerate.

The war with Phantom Lord demonstrates how personally Makarov regards attacks on his guild. After Jose Porla targets Fairy Tail and its members, Makarov confronts the rival guild master directly and uses Fairy Law to end their battle.

His relationship with Laxus Dreyar becomes central during the Battle of Fairy Tail. Makarov must choose between his love for his grandson and his responsibility to the guild after Laxus attempts to reshape Fairy Tail through force.

Later conflicts repeatedly place Makarov's life and leadership in jeopardy. He eventually uses Fairy Law against the Alvarez Empire's enormous army at catastrophic personal cost, although he later returns through the intervention of Mavis's magic.

Laxus Dreyar is Makarov's grandson. Their relationship mixes deep affection with painful disagreements over strength, reputation, and what Fairy Tail should represent.

Ivan Dreyar is Makarov's son. Makarov expels him from Fairy Tail after concluding that Ivan poses a danger to the guild.

Yuri Dreyar is Makarov's father and one of Fairy Tail's founding members.

Rita is Makarov's mother.

Mavis Vermillion is Fairy Tail's founding master and the person who named Makarov shortly after his birth.

Natsu Dragneel, Erza Scarlet, Gray Fullbuster, and the other Fairy Tail members are collectively treated by Makarov as his children.
