Hato Tsurubami

Hato is relentless, severe and almost completely consumed by work. She demands extraordinary effort from herself and expects other people to withstand similarly extreme standards.

Her harshness does not mean she is indifferent to medicine. Hato donates money to medical research and measures success primarily through results, as demonstrated by her satisfaction when a patient becomes capable of fleeing her rehabilitation regime.

She is difficult even for people close to her to understand. Although she questions and regrets many decisions in her life, the one choice she never doubts is giving birth to her daughter.

Hato possesses extraordinary stamina, with accounts of her working continuously for as long as one hundred hours without sleep. Her endurance underpins the fearsome reputation she develops among hospital staff.

She is also an experienced nurse with extensive practical medical knowledge. Her rehabilitation methods are notoriously severe, but they are focused on forcing patients toward physical recovery.

No named Abnormality, Minus or Style is established for Hato.

Hato's life predates the principal events of the series, but her work at Hakoniwa General Hospital places her close to several families whose histories later intersect at Hakoniwa Academy.

Roughly twenty years before the main story, Fukurou introduces Hato to Kajiki Kurokami. She becomes the Tsurubami representative in Kajiki's Jet Black Wedding Feast, and Kajiki ultimately marries all seven prospective brides rather than selecting only one.

Hato becomes Medaka's biological mother. Her death shortly after giving birth leaves an enormous gap in the Tsurubami and Kurokami families, while Fukurou's inability to accept that loss drives many of his later actions.

Fukurou Tsurubami is Hato's younger brother. Fukurou develops an obsessive attachment to Hato and spends years pursuing substitutes for the gentler sister he wished she had been.

Kajiki Kurokami is Hato's husband after she participates as the Tsurubami representative in his Jet Black Wedding Feast.

Medaka Kurokami is Hato's biological daughter and the one choice Hato is said never to have regretted.

Kamome Tsurubami is Hato's nephew through Fukurou.

Maguro Kurokami and Kujira Kurokami are Hato's stepchildren through Kajiki.
