Personality
Personality
Cross is arrogant, irresponsible and intensely private. He drinks heavily, spends extravagantly and accumulates debts that he routinely leaves Allen Walker to settle. His relationships with women and fondness for expensive things further reinforce the image of a man who refuses ordinary discipline.
That behavior coexists with exceptional perceptiveness. Cross rarely explains everything he knows, and he often pushes Allen through harsh experiences rather than offering straightforward guidance. His treatment of his apprentice can be cruel, but he also prepares Allen for dangers the Black Order itself does not fully understand.
Cross strongly resists institutional control. He cooperates with the Order when its objectives align with his own, yet neither headquarters nor Central can reliably predict where he is or what information he possesses.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Cross possesses the equipment-type Innocence Judgment, an ornate revolver whose bullets can pursue targets and deliver tremendous destructive force. The weapon can fire repeatedly without ordinary ammunition limitations and is powerful enough to damage high-level Akuma.
He also controls Grave of Maria, the preserved body of an Exorcist named Maria. Through her parasitic-type Innocence, Cross can use techniques such as Magdala Curtain, which conceals targets from perception, and a song capable of influencing the minds of listeners.
Cross is additionally an accomplished sorcerer and scientist. Most unusually, he has altered Akuma so that they can resist the Millennium Earl and obey him, producing modified Akuma such as Chomesuke.
Cross also possesses knowledge and abilities connected to the Fourteenth Noah and Noah's Ark. Through the Ark's piano, he can manipulate its systems in ways unavailable to ordinary Exorcists.
Story Role
Story Role
Cross takes Allen Walker as his apprentice after the events involving Mana Walker. He trains Allen as an Exorcist before sending him to Black Order headquarters with a letter of introduction.
For much of the early story, Cross is an absent objective rather than a constant companion. Allen and the others travel toward Japan while trying to locate him, discovering that he has been operating independently in territory dominated by Akuma.
Cross eventually reunites with the Exorcists during the conflict surrounding Noah's Ark and returns to headquarters. There he reveals that Allen is connected to the Fourteenth Noah and that the Fourteenth intends to use Allen as his host. Cross later disappears after a confrontation at headquarters, leaving his ultimate circumstances deliberately uncertain for much of the subsequent story.
Relationships
Relationships
Allen Walker is Cross's apprentice. Cross subjects him to severe training and routinely leaves him with debts, yet he also possesses crucial knowledge about Allen's past and his connection to the Fourteenth Noah.
Maria was an Exorcist whose body Cross preserves and controls through sorcery, allowing him to make use of her parasitic Innocence.
Timcanpy is Cross's golem and later accompanies Allen for much of his journey.
Anita and her mother are supporters of Cross who develop strong romantic feelings for him.
The Millennium Earl regards Cross as an especially troublesome opponent because of his unusual knowledge and ability to interfere with Akuma.
Nea D. Campbell entrusted Cross with responsibilities connected to his return and the Ark, making Cross one of the few people who understood part of the Fourteenth's plan before Allen learned the truth.
