Personality
Personality
Allen is polite, compassionate and stubbornly self-sacrificing. His experiences with Akuma leave him unable to regard them simply as monsters; through his cursed eye he can see the souls trapped inside, giving him a constant reminder that each Akuma began with a grieving human and a dead person manipulated by the Millennium Earl.
His gentle manners conceal a much rougher upbringing. Years travelling with Cross Marian taught Allen to gamble, cheat at cards, survive enormous debts and adapt quickly to dangerous situations. His appetite is equally extraordinary, partly because a parasitic-type Innocence consumes substantial energy.
Allen also has a pronounced tendency to hide pain behind a smile. He wants to keep moving regardless of what happens to him, a habit rooted in his promise to Mana Walker and reinforced by his desire to protect others from carrying his burdens.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Allen's Innocence is a parasitic type embedded in his left arm. Initially it transforms the arm into a massive Anti-Akuma weapon with enormous strength and claw-like fingers. Unlike equipment-type Accommodators, Allen cannot simply put his Innocence aside; it is biologically integrated with him.
After further synchronization, his Innocence develops into Crown Clown, covering him in a white mantle and forming a clawed left arm capable of destroying Akuma. Crown Clown can also produce the Sword of Exorcism, a large blade whose effects differ depending on whether its target is Akuma-related or human.
His cursed left eye is separate from his Innocence. The curse inflicted through Mana Walker allows Allen to perceive the souls imprisoned within Akuma, eventually developing enough that he can identify them at considerable range.
Allen is also an exceptional card player and experienced close-range fighter. His synchronization with Innocence reaches extraordinary levels, allowing him to confront increasingly powerful Akuma and Noah despite the damage such battles inflict on his body.
Story Role
Story Role
Allen's path to the Black Order begins with Mana Walker, the travelling performer who adopts him. After Mana dies, the Millennium Earl manipulates the grieving Allen into calling his guardian back through the Akuma-making process. Mana's Akuma curses Allen's eye, while Allen's Innocence activates and destroys the resulting Akuma.
Cross Marian subsequently trains Allen as an Exorcist and eventually sends him to Black Order headquarters. There he meets Lenalee Lee, Yu Kanda, Lavi and the other people who become his new family while the search for Innocence develops into an escalating war against the Millennium Earl and the Noah.
Allen eventually learns that he carries the memories of Nea D. Campbell, the Fourteenth Noah, whose consciousness is gradually awakening inside him. This makes Allen a target not only for the Noah Family but also for factions within the Black Order that regard his transformation as an existential threat.
Further revelations destabilize what Allen believes about Mana and his own past. Mana Walker is connected directly to Mana D. Campbell and the Millennium Earl, while Allen's own history before meeting Mana proves increasingly difficult to reconcile with his apparent age and memories. These mysteries become central to the later manga.
After the Order attempts to confine him and the Fourteenth's emergence becomes increasingly difficult to suppress, Allen leaves the organization rather than allow himself to be controlled. He continues moving forward under his own name while searching for the truth behind Mana, Nea and his forgotten past.
Relationships
Relationships
Mana Walker is Allen's adoptive father and the person from whom he takes the surname Walker. Mana teaches him to keep moving forward. Allen's attempt to resurrect Mana creates the Akuma that curses his left eye, and later revelations connect Mana far more deeply to the Millennium Earl and the Noah than Allen initially understands.
Cross Marian becomes Allen's master after Mana's death. His training is harsh and frequently irresponsible, but Cross teaches Allen how to fight as an Exorcist and eventually sends him to the Black Order.
Lenalee Lee is one of Allen's closest friends at headquarters. She repeatedly challenges his habit of sacrificing himself without considering how his loss would affect the people who care about him.
Lavi becomes a close companion during missions and the journey toward Japan. Allen's friendship with him also contributes to Lavi's growing conflict between personal attachment and Bookman neutrality.
Yu Kanda begins as an abrasive rival who calls Allen "Beansprout." Their constant arguments conceal increasing mutual trust. Kanda eventually chooses to help Allen even when doing so places him directly against the Black Order's orders.
Timcanpy accompanies Allen as a golem inherited from Cross and becomes his constant travelling companion.
Millennium Earl is Allen's principal enemy as an Exorcist and the person who exploited his grief to turn Mana into an Akuma. The later connection between the Earl, Mana and Nea makes their relationship considerably more personal and complicated than Allen initially knows.
Nea D. Campbell is the Fourteenth Noah whose memories reside within Allen. As Nea's consciousness awakens, Allen faces the possibility that his own identity will be overwritten.
