Sennen Hakushaku

The Earl is theatrical, cheerful and profoundly cruel. He approaches grieving humans with exaggerated politeness and sympathy, exploiting precisely the emotions that make them vulnerable. Once an Akuma is created, his warmth becomes openly sadistic.

His affection for the Noah Family appears genuine despite his willingness to manipulate almost everyone around him. He treats the Noah as family rather than ordinary subordinates and can display intense emotional reactions when they are harmed.

His hatred of Innocence and the force behind it is equally intense. The Earl regards the Black Order's Exorcists as enemies in a conflict stretching far beyond the current generation, although Allen Walker eventually occupies a uniquely complicated place within that hostility.

The Millennium Earl commands the Akuma manufacturing process. By persuading a grieving person to call the soul of someone they have lost, he summons that soul into a mechanical skeleton. The newly created Akuma then kills and wears the person who summoned it, beginning the process through which it can evolve.

He possesses immense physical strength, durability and supernatural power independently of his Akuma. He can fight powerful Exorcists directly and wield a massive broadsword associated with Lero. The sword resembles Allen's Sword of Exorcism in important respects.

As leader of the Noah Family, the Earl has authority over Akuma and access to Noah's Ark. His abilities encompass spatial manipulation, magical constructs and powers that place him far beyond ordinary Noah or Akuma.

The Earl establishes the central mechanism of the series in his first encounter with Allen Walker: grief creates the opening through which he manufactures Akuma. Allen has already experienced that process personally, making their conflict more intimate than an ordinary Exorcist's opposition to the Noah.

Throughout the early war, the Earl directs the Noah Family in searching for and destroying Innocence while increasing the Akuma population. He oversees the destruction of Exorcist units, the conflict surrounding Edo and the attempt to erase the old Noah's Ark before the Black Order can seize it.

The emergence of the Fourteenth Noah inside Allen transforms the Earl's interest in him. Allen carries Nea's memories, and the Earl's reaction to Nea combines hatred, grief and attachment in ways that initially make little sense to either Allen or the Black Order.

Later revelations establish that the current Earl's existence is bound to Mana D. Campbell and Nea D. Campbell. The original Millennium Earl split into two infants, Mana and Nea; subsequent events surrounding Nea's death and Mana's fractured identity eventually produced the Earl Allen knows. This history turns the central conflict into a struggle over identities and memories as much as the war between Innocence and Dark Matter.

Allen Walker is both an enemy Exorcist and a person of exceptional importance to the Earl. The Earl originally manipulates the grieving Allen into creating an Akuma from Mana. Allen later becomes the host of Nea's memories, radically changing what he represents to the Earl.

Road Kamelot, Tyki Mikk, Jasdero, Devit and the other Noah are treated as the Earl's family as well as his allies in the war against Innocence.

Lero is the Earl's loyal golem, serving as transportation and a conduit for several of his abilities.

Mana Walker and Nea D. Campbell are central to the Earl's true history. The original Earl's division and the subsequent experiences of the Campbell brothers explain much of the instability surrounding his present identity.

Cross Marian possesses knowledge about the Fourteenth and the Earl that makes him an especially dangerous opponent to the Noah.
