Personality
Personality
Conrad speaks and acts less frequently than several of his fellow God Hand members. He maintains an almost expressionless demeanor, rarely displaying Slan's sensual excitement or Ubik's gleeful manipulation.
His reserved behavior does not make him benevolent. Conrad participates without hesitation in the God Hand's sacrificial rites and in the manipulation of causality surrounding humanity.
Because the manga deliberately leaves the origins and individual motivations of the God Hand obscure, little personal history has been established for Conrad.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Conrad exists as an extraordinarily powerful astral entity. Like the other God Hand, he normally resides at a depth of the astral world that prevents straightforward physical manifestation, although major supernatural events allow him to exert influence on the corporeal world.
During the Eclipse, Conrad manipulates the enormous mass of faces beneath the God Hand, causing it to rise and form a platform. His abilities appear strongly associated with pestilence and mass death.
During the plague preceding the Incarnation Ceremony at Albion, Conrad's face briefly forms from a mass of diseased rats. The scene strongly associates him with the epidemic spreading through Midland, though the precise mechanics of his influence are not fully explained.
Story Role
Story Role
Conrad is present during the Eclipse after Griffith's Crimson Behelit activates and transports the Band of the Hawk into the interstice. Alongside the other God Hand, he oversees the ceremony through which Griffith is offered the possibility of becoming their fifth member.
Conrad witnesses Griffith sacrifice the Band of the Hawk and be transformed into Femto. He subsequently remains one of the God Hand influencing events through causality rather than acting openly in the physical world.
His later manifestation through plague-bearing rats occurs during the chain of disasters driving refugees toward the Tower of Conviction. Those events contribute to the conditions surrounding the Incarnation Ceremony that gives Griffith a physical body.
Relationships
Relationships
Void, Slan, Ubik and Femto are Conrad's fellow members of the God Hand. Together they preside over sacrifices and manipulate events from the depths of the astral world.
Griffith becomes Femto during the Eclipse after accepting the God Hand's offer and sacrificing the Band of the Hawk.
Guts and Casca encounter Conrad during the Eclipse as members of the sacrificed Band of the Hawk.
