Personality
Personality
Ubik is talkative, gleefully manipulative and unnervingly cheerful. His permanent grin and conversational manner contrast with the horror of the ceremonies in which he participates. Where Void speaks with ritual solemnity, Ubik is more intimate, coaxing people toward conclusions they may otherwise resist.
He is skilled at identifying guilt and emotional vulnerability. His arguments often contain genuine memories or uncomfortable truths, but he arranges them to make sacrifice seem like the inevitable continuation of a person's existing choices.
Ubik also displays open amusement at suffering. He treats psychological torment almost as entertainment while maintaining the God Hand's broader interest in causality.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Ubik is an astral entity of immense supernatural standing as a member of the God Hand. Like his companions, he ordinarily exists in a deep layer of the astral world and cannot be approached like a conventional physical opponent.
His most clearly demonstrated ability is the creation or presentation of elaborate visions. He can immerse a person in reconstructed memories and symbolic scenes, using those experiences to influence decisions during sacrificial ceremonies.
During Griffith's ceremony, Ubik and Conrad expose Griffith to a vision of his childhood dream and the countless dead who enabled his ascent. The experience is designed to convince him that abandoning his ambition would render their sacrifices meaningless.
Story Role
Story Role
Ubik first appears with the other God Hand when the Count's behelit is activated during the Black Swordsman Arc. He participates in explaining the choice before the Count and observes Guts's presence as a previously branded sacrifice.
His most substantial role comes during the Eclipse. As Griffith struggles with the decision placed before him, Ubik and Conrad draw him into a vision of his past and the path toward his dream.
The manipulation helps push Griffith toward sacrificing the Band of the Hawk, after which he is transformed into Femto and joins the God Hand.
Ubik continues appearing alongside the God Hand in later supernatural events, but his origins and former human identity remain unknown.
Relationships
Relationships
Void, Slan, Conrad and Femto are Ubik's fellow members of the God Hand.
Griffith becomes the focus of Ubik's psychological manipulation during the Eclipse. Ubik and Conrad confront him with visions of his past that help lead him toward sacrificing the Band of the Hawk.
Conrad works particularly closely with Ubik during Griffith's visions.
Guts encounters Ubik through God Hand ceremonies as a bearer of the Brand of Sacrifice.
