Bak Chang

Bak is intelligent, proud and highly conscious of his responsibilities as branch chief. He can be stern with subordinates and takes the Black Order's mission seriously, but his professional demeanor is much less stable when his personal feelings are involved.

His infatuation with Lenalee Lee is an obvious weakness. He keeps photographs of her and becomes embarrassed when others expose his interest. Fou exploits this mercilessly, teasing him despite their mutual loyalty.

Bak also carries discomfort over the darker research associated with his family and the Asian Branch. He understands that serving the Order sometimes places him inside institutions whose past decisions caused enormous suffering.

Bak is not an Exorcist and possesses no Innocence. His Chang bloodline nevertheless allows him to activate supernatural seals built into the Asian Branch by his ancestors.

Through those seals, Bak can manipulate aspects of the headquarters structure and its defenses. His authority is connected to the magical systems governing Fou, whose existence is bound to the branch.

He is also an accomplished scientist and administrator. Bak oversees research into Innocence and other supernatural phenomena while coordinating one of the Black Order's major international branches.

Bak becomes important after Allen Walker is brought to the Asian Branch following his encounter with Tyki Mikk. Bak oversees Allen's recovery and the attempts to determine whether his damaged Innocence can return.

He works with Fou and the branch's researchers as Allen retrains, eventually witnessing the emergence of Crown Clown during an Akuma attack.

Bak's family history is tied to the Second Exorcist program conducted at the Asian Branch. Members of the Chang and Epstein families participated in the experiments that produced artificial bodies for deceased Exorcists, including Yu Kanda and Alma Karma. That history leaves Bak acutely aware of what the Order has done in pursuit of stronger weapons.

Fou is the guardian of Bak's branch and one of the people closest to him. They constantly insult and strike at one another, but Fou is fiercely protective of Bak and his family.

Lenalee Lee is the object of Bak's conspicuous romantic interest. He collects photographs of her and becomes extremely embarrassed when his feelings are exposed.

Allen Walker recuperates under Bak's supervision after losing his Innocence. Bak and his researchers help investigate Allen's condition while Fou handles much of his physical retraining.

Komui Lee is Bak's counterpart at the European headquarters and, inconveniently for Bak, Lenalee's extremely protective older brother.

Yu Kanda is personally connected to the darkest chapter of Bak's family history through the Second Exorcist experiments conducted at the Asian Branch.
