Aoki Aka

Aka is serious, emotionally restrained and difficult to read. She speaks with little visible expression and approaches most situations with the detached manner appropriate to her position in health preservation.

She has a strong dislike of Misogi Kumagawa. Her hostility is connected to his history with Najimi Ajimu, whom Kumagawa previously sealed.

Despite the threatening implications of her ability, Aka functions professionally as a committee chairwoman and understands medicine well enough to distinguish between treating a patient and using illness as a weapon.

Five Focus is Aka's Minus. It allows her to manipulate five categories of physical affliction: external injuries, internal injuries, organic diseases, mental illnesses and constitutional conditions. She can move or otherwise manipulate these conditions rather than functioning merely as an ordinary healer.

This makes Five Focus useful both medically and offensively. A condition removed from one person can become a danger to another, turning the normal concept of healing into a potentially hostile exchange.

Aka also possesses medical knowledge appropriate to her position as chairwoman of the Health Preservation Committee.

Aka becomes prominent during the succession trials arranged to find a potential successor to Medaka. As one of Hakoniwa Academy's committee chairmen, she contributes a specialized challenge reflecting her own responsibilities and abilities.

Her connection to Ajimu and hostility toward Kumagawa also places her within the wider network of characters affected by the Not Equals and the academy's hidden history.

Aka later receives Hundred Gauntlets from Ajimu, temporarily placing her among the people entrusted with one of Ajimu's skills.

She continues appearing with the other committee chairmen as the school moves toward graduation and Medaka's departure.

Misogi Kumagawa is someone Aka openly dislikes, particularly because of Misogi Kumagawa's history of sealing Ajimu.

Najimi Ajimu is important to Aka through the events surrounding the succession trials. Ajimu later entrusts Aka with Hundred Gauntlets.

Medaka Kurokami encounters Aka as one of Hakoniwa Academy's committee chairmen during the succession process.

Uzume Megusuno, Konomi Mera, Kuroudo Iizuka and Tsue Kamimutsuro are fellow committee leaders who participate in the same broader succession trials.
