Misogi Kumagawa

Kumagawa is nihilistic, manipulative and perversely cheerful. He considers himself a permanent loser and interprets almost every experience through the expectation that he will eventually fail.

He can inflict severe harm with little visible emotional disturbance, yet his cruelty is mixed with a genuine identification with people who consider themselves weak, unsuccessful or excluded. Kumagawa does not simply want to defeat exceptional people; he wants to prove that people who have never been blessed with success can drag those exceptional people down to their level.

His apparent self-hatred coexists with extraordinary determination. No matter how badly he loses, he returns smiling and tries again. This refusal to stay defeated gradually becomes one of his more constructive qualities.

Kumagawa's best-known Minus is All Fiction, which allows him to make aspects of reality "nothing." He can erase injuries, damage and other events, making conventional attempts to defeat him extremely unreliable. Excessive use carries the danger of erasing things permanently.

Book Maker manifests as large screws and reduces a target's physical, mental and emotional capabilities toward Kumagawa's own level. Unlike All Fiction, its purpose is not simply destruction but forcing extraordinary opponents into the same condition as the self-proclaimed loser using it.

Kumagawa also fights with enormous screws, which he can manifest and use as weapons. Ajimu later gives him Hundred Gauntlets, allowing him to prevent something from becoming nothing and serving as a conceptual counterpart to All Fiction.

Kumagawa is introduced as a figure from Medaka's past and becomes the central threat posed by Class -13. His arrival turns the conflict into a direct challenge to Medaka's conviction that everyone can be understood and helped.

He forms his own Student Council and challenges Medaka's council, surrounding himself with other Minuses. Unlike earlier opponents who seek greater power, Kumagawa wants to demonstrate that weakness, resentment and failure can overcome the talented people who normally dominate the academy.

Medaka ultimately defeats him without erasing the qualities that make him Kumagawa. Unable to classify the result as another ordinary loss, he begins changing and accepts the vice-presidency of her Student Council.

Kumagawa remains a self-proclaimed loser afterward, but increasingly uses his destructive abilities to protect others. His inability to stop trying becomes one of the clearest contradictions in his claim that nothing has meaning.

Medaka Kurokami knew Kumagawa before Hakoniwa Academy and repeatedly tries to reach him despite his destructive behavior. Misogi Kumagawa is not used because the profiled character is never self-linked. After losing to Medaka, Kumagawa joins her Student Council and develops a complicated but genuine loyalty to her.

Najimi Ajimu has an extensive history with Kumagawa. He seals Najimi Ajimu using Book Maker, while she later manipulates and replaces parts of his skill set.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi opposes Kumagawa during the Class -13 conflict and represents many of the ordinary values Kumagawa initially dismisses.

Emukae Mukae is one of the Minuses who gathers around Kumagawa. Although he readily exploits Emukae Mukae's destructive mentality, her later changes contribute to the gradual transformation of their group.

Hansode Shiranui can interact with Kumagawa with unusual ease, sharing a tendency to conceal serious intentions behind playful behavior.
