Android 17

Lapis and his twin sister, Lazuli, are human delinquents before Dr. Gero abducts them. The former Red Ribbon Army scientist modifies both at the cellular level, installs perpetual energy reactors and renames them Androids 17 and 18. Their bodies remain predominantly organic despite the artificial enhancements.

Gero intends the twins to kill Goku in revenge for the destruction of the Red Ribbon Army. Their strength exceeds his ability to control them, however, and repeated attempts to suppress their free will make them openly hostile toward him. Gero eventually places them in suspended animation.

After Android 20—Gero’s own artificial-human form—retreats from Vegeta to his laboratory, he activates Androids 17 and 18 as a last resort. Android 17 refuses to obey, destroys the shutdown remote and awakens Android 16 despite Gero’s warnings.

Android 17 then kills Gero and leaves the laboratory with Androids 16 and 18. He decides to find and kill Goku, but approaches the programmed objective as a game rather than an urgent mission. The trio drives across the country, stops for clothing and avoids unnecessary attacks on civilians.

Future Trunks comes from a timeline in which alternate versions of Androids 17 and 18 murder Earth’s defenders and devastate civilization. The main-timeline Android 17 is still dangerous and irresponsible, but his conduct differs sharply from that of his future counterpart.

Android 17 is independent, confident and resistant to authority. Gero’s attempts to control him produce a lasting hostility toward coercion. He prefers decisions made from personal interest and reacts poorly when someone assumes ownership over his actions.

During the android conflict, he is playful and competitive. He treats the search for Goku as an opportunity to explore and insists on traveling by road even though flying would be faster. His interest in cars, scenery and games often takes priority over the mission implanted by Gero.

Android 17’s confidence can become carelessness. He refuses to retreat from Cell after warnings about absorption and does not initially recognize how quickly the biological android’s power is increasing. His determination to finish a fight on his own creates the opening Cell needs.

Years of protecting wildlife make him more disciplined and pragmatic. As a ranger, he patrols a remote reserve, confronts armed poachers and takes his responsibilities seriously. He remains sarcastic and self-contained but becomes capable of long-term commitment.

Android 17 is frugal with effort and disapproves of waste. His perpetual reactor gives him limitless stamina, yet he does not attack without purpose. During the Tournament of Power, he studies opponents, exploits rules and abandons conventional pride when deception offers a better result.

Family life is important to him, though he discusses it without sentimentality. He earns a high salary, lives with his zoologist wife and three children, and initially hopes to use the Super Dragon Balls for a family cruise. When given a much larger choice, he places countless strangers ahead of that private wish.

Android 17 is a lean young-looking man with blue eyes, straight black hair and a center-parted style that falls to his jaw. His human-based modifications slow visible aging, allowing him to retain much the same appearance over long periods.

At his introduction, he wears an orange scarf, black short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, green socks and blue-and-white shoes. A white long-sleeved undershirt bears the Red Ribbon Army insignia. He also wears a belt with pouches and a holster.

His clothing emphasizes ordinary fashion rather than military armor. Like Android 18, he shows no visible mechanical seams or components. An observer could not identify his artificial modifications merely from his body.

During the Majin Buu conflict, Android 17 appears briefly in clothing suited to rural outdoor work. His later ranger uniform includes a green-and-white shirt marked “MIR,” jeans, gloves, boots and a red armband labeled “RANGER.”

For the Tournament of Power, he retains the ranger design rather than adopting a martial-arts gi. The outfit reflects the identity he built after Cell’s defeat and distinguishes him visually from both his Red Ribbon origins and the uniformed Dragon Team fighters.

Android 17 possesses strength, speed and durability beyond the first generation of Super Saiyans. During the android conflict, he can fight the reunited Piccolo evenly, with neither gaining a sustainable advantage before Cell interrupts them.

His perpetual energy reactor provides effectively limitless stamina. Android 17 does not weaken through ordinary energy expenditure and can maintain high output after an organic opponent begins to tire. This makes prolonged combat particularly favorable to him.

Artificial energy cannot be detected through ordinary ki sensing. Opponents must locate Android 17 visually or through physical evidence. He can still control his output, fly and release energy in beams, spheres and rapid volleys.

Android 17’s most distinctive ability is barrier generation. He can create transparent spherical or curved fields strong enough to stop energy attacks, contain explosions or shield multiple people. He uses barriers offensively as well, striking opponents with the field or trapping them inside one.

His work as a ranger gives him years to train against poachers and powerful creatures. By the Tournament of Power, his strength has increased enormously. He can spar with Super Saiyan Blue Goku, survive attacks from fighters operating on a divine scale and contribute against opponents much stronger than his android-era self.

Android 17’s combat judgment is as important as his increased power. He feigns defeat, interrupts transformations, attacks distracted targets and exploits the tournament’s ring-out rule. His inexhaustible energy supports constant movement and repeated barrier use without normal fatigue.

Android 18 is Android 17’s twin sister, originally named Lazuli. Android 17 and Android 18 endure Gero’s abduction and modification together, giving them an instinctive loyalty despite frequent teasing. Android 17 usually takes the initiative after their activation, but Android 18 is willing to challenge his decisions.

During their travels, Android 17 relies on Android 18’s judgment while preserving his role as the group’s self-appointed leader. They separate after Cell’s defeat and build independent families. Reunited for the Tournament of Power, the twins coordinate smoothly despite years apart.

Dr. Gero kidnaps Lapis, modifies his body and tries to erase his independence. Android 17 responds by destroying Dr. Gero’s remote and killing him. The rebellion ensures that Gero never directs either twin in battle after their final awakening.

Android 16 is released by Android 17 despite Gero’s insistence that the fully mechanical model is dangerous. Android 17 respects Android 16’s strength and accepts his quiet behavior without demanding obedience. Both later display a strong connection with wildlife.

Piccolo confronts Android 17 after reuniting with Kami. Android 17 initially assumes Piccolo cannot threaten him, but their fight becomes an evenly matched exchange of technique, stamina and power. Android 17’s limitless energy begins giving him a long-term advantage before Cell arrives.

Cell is programmed to absorb Android 17 and Android 18. Android 17 refuses Cell’s demands and continues fighting despite warnings from Android 16. Cell exploits a distraction, captures Android 17 with his tail and absorbs him to reach his second form.

Son Goku is Android 17’s original programmed target, yet they do not meet during the android conflict. Goku later visits Android 17’s island to recruit him for the Tournament of Power. Android 17 tests Son Goku’s strength before agreeing to help.

Android 17 respects Son Goku’s power but does not adopt his enthusiasm for straightforward combat. During the tournament, Android 17 often favors interruption, misdirection and efficient ring-outs, while Son Goku seeks direct contests.

Kuririn is Android 17’s brother-in-law. Kuririn asks Shenron to remove the explosives inside both twins, even though he is principally concerned about Android 18. Android 17 later becomes part of the same extended family and fights alongside Kuririn for Universe 7.

Marron is Android 17’s niece. The main story shows little direct interaction between them, but Marron belongs to the family Android 17 gains through his sister’s marriage.

Android 17’s wife is a zoologist who lives with him and their children within the royal nature park. Their family includes one biological child and two adopted children. None of their names has been established in the main canon.

Vegeta, Future Trunks, Tien Shinhan and the other fighters initially confront Android 17 as an enemy. Android 17 helps defeat Vegeta’s group after Android 18’s duel and later fights beside several of the same people in defense of Universe 7.

Jiren becomes Android 17’s most powerful Tournament of Power opponent. Android 17 cannot defeat Jiren directly, but his barriers, surprise attacks and willingness to exploit openings make him a persistent problem. His resistance helps Goku and Frieza continue the final battle.

Android 17 awakens after Android 20 reaches Gero’s laboratory. He destroys the shutdown remote, releases Android 16 and kills Gero. The three androids then leave to find Goku, refusing to follow the route or urgency Gero intended.

Vegeta’s group confronts them outside the laboratory. Android 18 defeats Vegeta, while Android 17 intervenes when the other fighters break the agreed one-on-one conditions. He overwhelms Piccolo and Tien before allowing the defeated group to live.

Cell’s arrival changes Android 17’s journey from pursuit to survival. After Piccolo reunites with Kami, he challenges Android 17 and reveals enough power to fight him evenly. Their duel is interrupted by Cell, who has increased his strength by absorbing human populations.

Android 16 tries to protect Android 17 and initially gains an advantage over Cell. After Cell absorbs Android 17, the android remains within him until Gohan’s attack causes Cell to expel Android 18 and later die. Android 17 is restored when Shenron revives those killed by Cell.

Android 17 appears briefly during the final battle with Majin Buu, contributing energy to Goku’s Spirit Bomb. Later material establishes that he has become a ranger at a royal nature preserve, guarding rare animals from poachers.

In Dragon Ball Super, Goku recruits Android 17 for the Tournament of Power. He performs as one of Universe 7’s most effective members, eliminating opponents, conserving stamina and using barriers to protect teammates.

Android 17 helps fight Toppo and Jiren and repeatedly appears to sacrifice himself. He survives the tournament’s final exchange and becomes Universe 7’s last contestant in the arena, making him the official winner. Given the Super Dragon Balls, he wishes for every erased universe to be restored.

Android 17 begins by defining freedom as the absence of commands. Killing Gero and abandoning the laboratory free him physically, but his first independent plan remains a relaxed version of the mission Gero assigned him.

His refusal to retreat from Cell shows the immaturity behind that freedom. Android 17 mistakes confidence for autonomy and continues fighting because he does not want another person deciding his actions. The result is his absorption and loss of control over his own body.

After Cell’s defeat, Android 17 chooses a life almost completely detached from his original purpose. Ranger work gives his limitless power a protective application and suits his preference for solitude. He also accepts the sustained responsibilities of marriage and parenthood.

The Tournament of Power shows a more mature understanding of independence. Android 17 works within a team without surrendering his judgment. He disobeys assumptions, interrupts opponents and chooses cooperation when it improves everyone’s chance of survival.

His final wish completes that progression. Android 17 enters the tournament hoping to obtain a luxury cruise for his family, a modest and personal goal. When he wins, he restores the erased universes instead, extending his concern beyond his island, family and home universe.

“Android 17” is Dr. Gero’s numerical designation for the seventeenth known artificial human in his program. The designation replaces the personal name Lapis after Gero modifies him.

The Japanese term jinzōningen means “artificial human” and covers several different constructions within the series. Android 17 is more accurately a cyborg because he was born human and retains an organic base.

“Lapis” comes from lapis lazuli, a blue metamorphic stone used as a gemstone and pigment. His twin sister’s human name, Lazuli, completes the mineral’s name when paired with his.

The English title “Android” is retained even after his human origin becomes established. Neither his family nor colleagues commonly address him as Lapis, and “17” remains his ordinary name.

Dragon Ball GT creates a second artificial version called Hell Fighter 17. The two merge into Super 17 under the control of Gero and Dr. Myuu. Android 18 helps Goku exploit the fusion’s weakness after Super 17 kills Kuririn.

Dragon Ball Daima does not give Android 17 a major role in the Demon Realm expedition. His isolation on the wildlife preserve continues to separate him from many gatherings involving Earth’s regular defenders.

Android 17 is playable across the Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Xenoverse, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dokkan Battle, Dragon Ball Legends and Sparking! franchises. Games commonly distinguish his android-era, Super ranger and GT fusion-associated forms.

Alternate game stories often emphasize time manipulation, cloned artificial humans or Red Ribbon programming. His barriers and perpetual energy make him particularly suited to defensive, assist-oriented and stamina-based game mechanics.

Android 17 placed eighteenth in the worldwide DRAGON BALL THE ONE popularity poll. The numerical coincidence placed Android 17 at number 18, while his twin sister ranked eighth.

His fight with Piccolo is frequently identified as one of the android arc’s strongest battles. The exchange stands out because both fighters use varied techniques and comparable power before Cell’s arrival changes the conflict.
