Lazuli and her twin brother, Lapis, are ordinary human delinquents before Dr. Gero abducts them. The former Red Ribbon Army scientist modifies their bodies at the cellular level, adds perpetual energy reactors and designates them Androids 18 and 17. Most of their bodies remain organic rather than mechanical.

Gero intends to use the twins as weapons against Son Goku, whose destruction of the Red Ribbon Army motivates his android program. Their independent personalities make them difficult to control, however, and Gero repeatedly places them in suspended animation while adjusting their obedience programming.

After Android 20—Gero’s mechanized form—retreats to his laboratory, he activates Androids 17 and 18 as a last resort. Android 17 immediately refuses orders, awakens Android 16 and kills Gero. The three leave the laboratory and begin a leisurely search for Goku.

Future Trunks comes from a world in which versions of Androids 17 and 18 murder most of Earth’s fighters and devastate civilization. The main-timeline pair are less destructive and treat the search for Goku as entertainment rather than a campaign of indiscriminate extermination.

Android 18’s first major fight is against Vegeta. She allows him to exhaust himself against her inexhaustible energy, then breaks his arm and defeats the other fighters who intervene. Despite her overwhelming advantage, she spares them and resumes traveling with Androids 17 and 16.

Android 18 and Android 17 cooperate instinctively in battle. Their future counterparts become mass murderers, but the main-timeline twins develop separate lives after Cell’s defeat. During the Tournament of Power, Android 18 trusts Android 17’s strategy and fights beside him for their universe’s survival.

Kuririn first meets Android 18 as an enemy. She kisses Kuririn on the cheek after defeating Vegeta and the others, leaving him attracted to her despite the threat she represents. When Kuririn receives a remote that can shut her down and destroy her, he crushes it.

After the Cell Games, Kuririn asks Shenron to make Android 18 and Android 17 human. When that proves impossible, he instead has their internal explosives removed. Android 18 is surprised by Kuririn’s concern and later marries him.

Android 18 teases Kuririn but respects his courage and kindness. She encourages him to resume training and fights beside him during the Tournament of Power. Their differing power levels do not prevent them from operating as equal partners in family decisions.

Marron is Android 18 and Kuririn’s daughter. Android 18 is attentive and protective toward Marron, balancing her blunt manner with patient care. She temporarily leaves Marron with trusted friends while participating in dangerous battles.

Dr. Gero kidnaps, modifies and renames Android 18. She never accepts Dr. Gero’s claim of ownership and supports Android 17’s rebellion against him. His attempt to erase their independence ultimately causes his death.

Android 16 accompanies the twins after they release him from Gero’s laboratory. Android 18 initially shares Android 17’s curiosity about Android 16’s power and purpose. She later refuses to abandon him after Cell damages his body.

Vegeta challenges Android 18 immediately after becoming a Super Saiyan. Android 18 remains calm as Vegeta exhausts himself, then breaks his arm and defeats him. The humiliation intensifies Vegeta’s decision to train in the Room of Spirit and Time.

Future Trunks reacts to Android 18 through memories of her murderous future counterpart. Android 18 has no personal knowledge of Future Trunks’s world and treats him as another hostile fighter. The contrast between the two versions demonstrates how altered circumstances produce different behavior.

Cell is programmed to absorb Android 18 and Android 17 to complete his body. Android 18 hides from Cell after her brother is taken, but Vegeta’s interference allows him to reach her. Cell absorbs her, achieves his perfect form and later expels her after Gohan’s attack forces him to regress.

During the Majin Buu conflict, Android 18 searches for the Dragon Balls and helps defend the Lookout. Super Buu turns her and the others there into food, killing them until the Namekian Dragon Balls restore Buu’s victims.

In Dragon Ball Super, Android 18 participates in later crises and joins Universe 7’s Tournament of Power team. She defeats several opponents, protects Kuririn and helps Android 17 fight Universe 2’s remaining warriors before being eliminated while saving her brother from falling out of the arena.

Marriage and motherhood give Android 18 a stable identity beyond Gero’s designation. She does not become conventionally sentimental or abandon her interest in money, fashion and independence. Instead, those traits become part of an ordinary human life she was once denied.

The Tournament of Power brings her modifications back into a protective context. Her limitless stamina and coordination with Android 17 are no longer weapons directed by Gero but abilities she chooses to use for family, friends and the survival of Universe 7.

“Android 18” is Dr. Gero’s numerical designation for the eighteenth known model in his artificial-human program. The English word “android” is conventional in localization, although the Japanese jinzōningen more broadly means “artificial human.”

Because she retains an organic human base, Android 18 is more accurately described as a cyborg than as a fully synthetic android. The series applies the same general Japanese term to modified humans, biological constructions and mechanical robots.

Her original human name, Lazuli, comes from lapis lazuli, a blue metamorphic stone used as a gemstone and pigment. Her twin brother’s original name, Lapis, completes the mineral’s full name when paired with hers.

The name is not commonly used by characters within the main story. “18” remains her ordinary form of address even after she rejects Gero and establishes an independent family.
