Vegeta

Vegeta is born into Planet Vegeta’s royal family and named after both his father and the Saiyan homeworld. Recognized as an elite from childhood, he develops an intense belief in the superiority of his bloodline and expects strength to determine rank, authority and personal worth.

The Saiyans serve Frieza, conquering planets whose inhabitants are killed or displaced before the worlds are sold. Vegeta fights alongside Nappa and Raditz, spending much of his youth away from Planet Vegeta. Frieza destroys the planet and most of the Saiyan population, then tells Vegeta that it was lost to a meteor impact.

Vegeta continues serving Frieza after the destruction, despite despising his control. He becomes a ruthless planetary conqueror and treats weaker lives as expendable. His status as a prince retains symbolic importance to him even though his kingdom, subjects and throne no longer exist.

After Raditz is killed on Earth, Vegeta and Nappa learn through his scouter that the planet has Dragon Balls capable of granting wishes. They travel to Earth intending to obtain immortality. Vegeta allows the Saibamen and Nappa to fight first, killing Nappa himself when the injured warrior can no longer continue.

Goku defeats Vegeta’s Great Ape transformation with help from Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe. Krillin prepares to kill him, but Goku asks that Vegeta be spared so they can fight again. Humiliated, Vegeta retreats and turns his attention to the Namekian Dragon Balls.

Vegeta is proud, irritable and intensely conscious of hierarchy. He introduces himself through his royal status and treats defeat as an assault on his identity. His confidence is supported by formidable ability, but it can become brittle when an opponent exceeds what he believes his birth should guarantee.

Competition with Goku dominates much of Vegeta’s life. The idea that a low-class Saiyan can repeatedly surpass an elite prince contradicts the social order in which Vegeta was raised. He responds by training obsessively, seeking new transformations and rejecting assistance that might make an achievement feel unearned.

Vegeta initially equates compassion with weakness. He kills subordinates who fail, abandons temporary allies and uses civilians as leverage. Living on Earth gradually changes his behaviour before he is willing to acknowledge any change in his values.

His affection is expressed more through action than speech. Vegeta remains embarrassed by public sentiment, but he protects Bulma, trains Trunks and reacts violently when either is endangered. He also becomes capable of apologizing, accepting responsibility and placing another person’s survival above his own pride.

Vegeta retains severe habits even after becoming an ally. He is blunt, impatient and willing to take dangerous risks to prove his strength. Later maturity does not erase his ambition; it gives that ambition boundaries, allowing him to compete with Goku without regarding the destruction of everyone around him as an acceptable price.

Vegeta is a compact, heavily muscled man with sharply upswept black hair and a pronounced widow’s peak. His height is officially listed as 164 cm and his weight as 56 kg. His hair retains the same basic shape throughout adulthood, consistent with pure-blooded Saiyan physiology.

At his introduction, Vegeta wears a dark blue bodysuit beneath white-and-gold Frieza Force battle armor. The armor has large shoulder guards, a segmented waist covering, white gloves and boots. He also wears a red-lensed scouter over his left eye.

Vegeta’s Saiyan tail is wrapped around his waist before his battle on Earth. Yajirobe cuts it off while Vegeta is in Great Ape form, and it never grows back. Later armor removes the skirt and oversized shoulder sections, producing the streamlined design reproduced for him by Capsule Corporation.

During the Majin Buu conflict, Vegeta fights in a sleeveless blue bodysuit without torso armor. As Majin Vegeta, a black “M” appears on his forehead, dark outlines form around his eyes and his musculature becomes more pronounced.

His Super Saiyan forms turn his hair gold and his eyes green or turquoise. Super Saiyan God changes his hair and eyes to red while giving him a slimmer build; Super Saiyan Blue makes them cyan. Ultra Ego gives Vegeta purple hair and eyes, removes his eyebrows and surrounds him with an aura associated with destruction energy.

Vegeta is an elite Saiyan fighter with exceptional strength, speed, durability and ki control. Even before reaching Earth, he can destroy planets and generate an artificial moon to trigger Great Ape transformation. He has extensive experience fighting unfamiliar species across different environments.

He is highly analytical in battle. Vegeta measures changes in an opponent’s strength, identifies weaknesses and adapts his tactics quickly. His anger and arrogance can override that judgment, particularly when he believes a transformation has placed him beyond challenge.

Vegeta learns to sense ki after fighting Earth’s martial artists, abandoning his earlier dependence on scouters. He later develops fine control over energy suppression, flight, barriers, rapid volleys and concentrated beams. He can fight effectively at close range or bombard an opponent from a distance.

His Saiyan biology once allowed recovery from near-fatal injuries to increase his power substantially. Vegeta exploits this effect on Namek, even persuading Krillin to injure him so that Dende can heal him. The advantage becomes less relevant after his natural power reaches much higher levels.

Vegeta attains Super Saiyan through severe training and frustration, then develops stronger grades in the Room of Spirit and Time. He later uses Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. His control of divine ki allows him to challenge gods and fighters from other universes.

Training on Yardrat teaches Vegeta advanced spirit control and Forced Spirit Fission. Beerus later trains him in destruction energy, leading to Ultra Ego, a state that converts his battle drive and damage into greater offensive power while his body can endure it.

Son Goku is Vegeta’s rival, measuring point and closest martial equal. Vegeta initially regards Son Goku as an offensive contradiction: a low-class Saiyan who defeats an elite prince. His pursuit of Son Goku drives years of training, but their competition gradually develops into trust.

Vegeta criticizes Son Goku’s recklessness while often taking similar risks himself. He understands Son Goku’s fighting instincts better than most allies and can coordinate with him under extreme pressure. During the battle with Kid Buu, Vegeta finally admits that Goku is the better fighter, though he continues trying to surpass him afterward.

Bulma gives Vegeta shelter after Namek and becomes his partner. Their relationship develops largely outside the original manga’s immediate focus, but Bulma’s confidence allows her to challenge Vegeta without fearing his temper. Vegeta rarely voices affection directly, yet repeatedly modifies his decisions around her safety.

When Beerus strikes Bulma, Vegeta’s rage briefly pushes him beyond Goku’s earlier performance against the God of Destruction. He later refuses to leave Bulma near the end of her pregnancy, prioritizing the birth of their daughter over training with Whis.

Trunks is Vegeta’s son, though Vegeta initially displays little interest in him as an infant. The arrival of Future Trunks gives Vegeta an adult training partner who both admires and challenges him. Future Trunks’s death at Cell’s hands provokes Vegeta into an immediate, grief-driven attack.

Vegeta trains the younger Trunks more openly but maintains strict expectations. He promises to take Trunks to an amusement park if the boy can land a blow during training and eventually keeps that promise. Before sacrificing himself against Majin Buu, Vegeta embraces Trunks for the first time.

Bulla is Vegeta and Bulma’s daughter. Vegeta becomes visibly protective of Bulla and participates more comfortably in her care than he did during Trunks’s infancy. Later depictions often show Bulla capable of directing her otherwise severe father.

King Vegeta is Vegeta’s father and predecessor as Saiyan monarch. Vegeta inherits King Vegeta’s pride, title and belief in elite bloodlines. The collapse of their civilization leaves Vegeta claiming a royal identity without a kingdom to govern.

Tarble is Vegeta’s younger brother, sent away because he lacked the aggression and combat power expected of a Saiyan royal. Vegeta shows surprise rather than hostility when Tarble later seeks his help. Their relationship is explored primarily in the animated special Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!.

Nappa serves beside Vegeta for years as a warrior and subordinate. Vegeta values Nappa only while he remains useful and kills him after Goku disables him. Raditz is another surviving Saiyan colleague, but Vegeta shows no concern over Raditz’s death beyond the information it provides about the Dragon Balls.

Frieza enslaves the Saiyans, destroys Planet Vegeta and keeps Vegeta under his authority. Vegeta fears Frieza while secretly planning to overthrow him through immortality. His breakdown during their battle on Namek exposes the terror and humiliation hidden beneath his pride.

Vegeta’s hatred of Frieza persists after he settles on Earth. The tyrant’s resurrection gives Vegeta an opportunity to fight him as a Super Saiyan Blue, though Goku ultimately delivers the decisive attack. During the Tournament of Power, Vegeta cooperates with Frieza only because their universe’s survival requires it.

Gohan begins as one of the Earth fighters Vegeta dismisses, but Vegeta comes to recognize his exceptional potential. He blames himself when his arrogance allows Cell to reach perfection and later apologizes to Gohan after failing to stop Cell’s attack. Vegeta’s willingness to protect Gohan becomes an early sign of his changing loyalties.

Piccolo is initially an enemy and later a blunt, dependable ally. Vegeta and Piccolo rarely express personal warmth, but both understand the costs of their former lives and the responsibilities created by family. Krillin changes from a disposable opponent to someone Vegeta trusts in battle, despite retaining a combative manner toward him.

Whis trains Vegeta in divine ki and exposes wasted movement in his fighting style. Vegeta attempts to earn Whis’s instruction through food and persistent requests. Beerus represents both a superior power and an uncomfortable link to Planet Vegeta’s destruction; later, Beerus teaches Vegeta the principles of destruction.

Cabba is a Saiyan from Universe 6 whom Vegeta treats as a student. Vegeta threatens Cabba to provoke his Super Saiyan transformation, then promises to show him Universe 7’s Planet Sadala. During the Tournament of Power, Vegeta’s determination to protect Cabba’s future helps drive him beyond his limits.

Broly is another surviving Saiyan whose extraordinary power overwhelms Vegeta’s initial advantages. Vegeta later trains alongside Broly on Beerus’s world, accepting his presence as a potential ally. Jiren earns Vegeta’s respect during the Tournament of Power by embodying disciplined strength without divine status.

Vegeta enters the story as the senior threat of the Saiyan invasion. He watches Nappa destroy much of Earth’s defending force before fighting Goku himself. The Kaio-ken allows Goku to exceed him temporarily, but Vegeta responds by creating an artificial moon and becoming a Great Ape.

The combined efforts of Goku, Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe defeat Vegeta without killing him. Goku’s decision to spare him creates both their rivalry and the possibility of Vegeta’s later change. Vegeta leaves Earth humiliated but alive.

On Namek, Vegeta operates independently against Frieza’s forces, killing Cui, Dodoria, Zarbon and members of the Ginyu Force. He alternately threatens and cooperates with Gohan and Krillin while trying to obtain immortality before Frieza.

Frieza tortures and kills Vegeta after revealing his responsibility for Planet Vegeta’s destruction. Before dying, Vegeta begs Goku to defeat Frieza for the Saiyans. He is later revived and transported to Earth, where he begins living at Capsule Corporation.

During the android conflict, Vegeta reveals that he has become a Super Saiyan and destroys Android 19. His pride later leads him to permit Cell to absorb Android 18, believing that the resulting perfect form will provide a worthy test. The decision contributes directly to Cell becoming an existential threat.

Vegeta allows Babidi to exploit the evil remaining in his heart so that he can fight Goku without restraint. As Majin Vegeta, he kills spectators and rejects the domestic life he believes has weakened him. After recognizing the danger to his family, he incapacitates Goten and Trunks, embraces his son and sacrifices himself in an unsuccessful attempt to destroy Majin Buu.

Revived for the final battle, Vegeta fights beside Goku and helps arrange the Spirit Bomb that destroys Kid Buu. In Dragon Ball Super, he trains with Whis, masters divine transformations and represents Universe 7 in contests against other universes.

The later manga sends Vegeta to Yardrat during the conflict with Moro, where Forced Spirit Fission gives him a specialized answer to stolen energy. During the battle with Granolah and Gas, Vegeta unveils Ultra Ego and begins confronting the guilt attached to the Saiyans’ history of conquest.

Vegeta’s early identity rests on three assumptions: royal birth establishes superiority, Saiyans exist to conquer and weakness deserves death. His defeat on Earth undermines all three. Goku’s low-class origin is especially intolerable because it proves that effort and adaptation can overturn inherited rank.

His years at Capsule Corporation change his circumstances before changing his language. Vegeta continues to claim indifference while forming attachments to Bulma and Trunks. Moments of concern appear involuntarily, such as his attack on Cell after Future Trunks is killed.

Majin Vegeta is an attempt to reverse that development. Vegeta believes domestic life has made him soft and allows Babidi to draw out his aggression. The experiment instead confirms that he can no longer return to the person he was: his final decisions are made for his family and Earth rather than for personal victory.

Acknowledging Goku’s superiority during the battle with Kid Buu marks a major reduction in Vegeta’s insecurity. He does not stop competing, but he begins recognizing that Goku’s strength comes partly from fighting to test limits rather than to prove status. Vegeta’s own motivation broadens beyond preserving wounded pride.

In Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta becomes a more present father, a teacher to Cabba and a protector of Universe 7. His training also diverges from Goku’s. Rather than simply copying Ultra Instinct, he studies destruction and develops Ultra Ego, pursuing a path suited to his temperament.

The Granolah conflict forces Vegeta to address historical responsibility. He does not claim personal guilt for crimes committed before his birth, but he accepts that the Saiyans’ violence has consequences for survivors. His offer to bear Granolah’s revenge shows how far he has moved from the prince who once considered conquered peoples irrelevant.

“Vegeta” is derived from “vegetable.” The name supplies the first portion of the word, while his brother Tarble’s name supplies the remainder. The same pun is applied to Planet Vegeta and King Vegeta.

The Saiyan term is itself formed by rearranging the Japanese word yasai, meaning vegetables. Creator Akira Toriyama uses vegetable-based names throughout the Saiyan cast, including Kakarot from carrot, Raditz from radish and Broly from broccoli.

Vegeta has no family name. “Prince Vegeta” is a title and given name, while “Vegeta IV,” commonly used in derivative material or fan discussion, distinguishes him conceptually from previous royal namesakes but is not his ordinary canonical form of address.

The title “Prince of All Saiyans” reflects his insistence on royal identity after the destruction of his people. He never formally becomes king in the main story and continues calling himself prince even after King Vegeta’s death.

Several early films use Vegeta as a reluctant ally who arrives after the central conflict has begun. He battles enemies including Meta-Cooler, Android 13, Bojack, Janemba and the original film version of Broly in continuities that do not align cleanly with the manga.

Dragon Ball GT portrays an older Vegeta living fully as an Earth resident. Bulma’s machinery helps him reach Super Saiyan 4, and he fuses with Goku to form Gogeta against Omega Shenron. His mustache in the early series became a notable temporary redesign.

Modern films integrate Vegeta more directly into continuing canon. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods emphasizes his efforts to keep Beerus calm, while Dragon Ball Super: Broly gives him an extended battle with Broly and his first animated use of Super Saiyan God.

In Dragon Ball Daima, Vegeta is transformed into a smaller body with the other principal characters and travels into the Demon Realm. The series expands his transformations and gives him major battles separate from Goku.

Vegeta is playable in nearly every major Dragon Ball game line, including Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Xenoverse, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dokkan Battle, Dragon Ball Legends and Sparking! Zero. Games often provide numerous separate versions based on saga, armor, transformation and fusion.

He also appears in Toriyama’s parody manga Neko Majin and in Weekly Shōnen Jump crossover games. Alternate game stories frequently explore hypothetical victories, different fusions or versions in which Vegeta retains his earlier allegiance.

Vegeta has consistently ranked among the franchise’s most popular characters. In the first worldwide official Dragon Ball character poll, DRAGON BALL THE ONE, he finished second behind Goku, confirming his position as the series’ leading rival character.

Earlier reader polls also placed Vegeta near the top, though rankings shifted between arcs and publications. His popularity increased as the original manga moved him from principal villain to uneasy ally, family member and co-defender of Earth.

Critical discussion frequently focuses on the length and visibility of his development. His attack on Cell after Future Trunks’s death, sacrifice against Majin Buu and admission that Goku is superior are commonly identified as major turning points.

The Majin Vegeta design, Final Flash stance, Saiyan armor and sharply upswept hair became widely reproduced in figures, apparel, games and cosplay. His declarations of Saiyan pride and fixation on surpassing Kakarot are among the franchise’s most recognizable character traits.

Vegeta also established a prominent model for later manga rivals: an initially antagonistic prodigy whose competition with the protagonist develops into reluctant loyalty. His combination of arrogance, repeated defeat, persistence and gradual domestic attachment has remained central to his reception across successive Dragon Ball series.
