Sai escorts Orochimaru and Kabuto back to their hideout while secretly evaluating the purpose of his Foundation assignment. Naruto and the others follow Yamato's tracking seed and infiltrate the underground complex. Along the way, Sai reflects on Naruto’s determination to rescue Sasuke despite the pain it has caused him, leading him to question Danzō’s belief that emotions only weaken a shinobi.

Kabuto eventually discovers Sai’s deception, but Sai chooses to aid Team Kakashi instead of completing his original mission. His decision marks the first time he openly acts according to his own convictions rather than following orders.

The reunited Team Kakashi finally encounters Sasuke. Naruto and Sakura are stunned by his dramatic growth in strength and composure. Sasuke effortlessly overwhelms the entire group, demonstrating speed and swordsmanship far beyond their expectations. He even suppresses the Nine-Tailed Fox’s chakra within Naruto, revealing an ability that shocks both Naruto and Yamato.

Before Sasuke can kill his former teammates, Orochimaru intervenes and reminds him that their current objective lies elsewhere. Sasuke reluctantly departs with Orochimaru, leaving Naruto frustrated by how wide the gap between them has become.
