Personality
Personality
Kanda is blunt, hostile and intensely private. He dislikes unnecessary conversation, has little tolerance for incompetence and readily threatens allies who irritate him. Lavi's habit of calling him "Yu" is particularly effective at provoking him, while Allen's personality produces almost immediate mutual antagonism.
His apparent coldness comes with a strict determination to survive until he accomplishes a private objective. Kanda rejects the romantic idea that Exorcists are heroes who can save everyone, and he is willing to make decisions in battle that others regard as ruthless.
That attitude does not mean he lacks attachments. Kanda often expresses concern through actions rather than words, and his willingness to place himself in danger for companions becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile with the detached persona he presents.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Kanda's Anti-Akuma weapon is Mugen, a katana-type Innocence. Its techniques channel Innocence through the blade to produce powerful cutting attacks and supernatural manifestations. Kaichū: Ichigen creates insect-like entities from the sword's energy, while subsequent levels draw progressively more power from both Kanda and Mugen.
Kanda is an exceptional swordsman even without invoking his strongest techniques. His speed, reflexes and precision allow him to fight Akuma at close range and contend with opponents capable of overwhelming ordinary Exorcists.
His body also possesses abnormal regenerative abilities. Injuries that should permanently disable or kill an ordinary human can heal at extraordinary speed, although regeneration places limits on his body rather than making him truly invulnerable.
Mugen is eventually destroyed, but Kanda's bond with Innocence does not end. His Innocence later becomes a Crystal type generated from his own blood, recreating Mugen as a weapon directly connected to his body.
Story Role
Story Role
Kanda is among the first Exorcists Allen Walker meets after reaching Black Order headquarters. Their first mission together establishes their hostile dynamic immediately: Allen wants to protect everyone involved, while Kanda prioritizes completing the mission even when casualties appear unavoidable.
As a disciple of Froi Tiedoll, Kanda participates in the search for his missing General and later joins the wider campaign surrounding Edo and the Noah's Ark. His combat ability makes him one of the Order's most reliable front-line Exorcists despite his refusal to behave like an agreeable teammate.
Kanda is eventually revealed to be a Second Exorcist, an artificial human created by placing the brain of a deceased Exorcist into a new body. His regeneration comes from the experiments conducted on him at the Asian Branch. Alma Karma was another child produced by the same program.
The mysterious woman Kanda has spent years searching for is tied to memories inherited from his previous life. Alma carries the brain of that woman's former Exorcist incarnation, turning their reunion into the culmination of the memories and emotions that have haunted both Second Exorcists.
After the battle with Alma, Kanda temporarily disappears but later returns and synchronizes with Mugen again. When Allen becomes a fugitive from the Black Order, Kanda ultimately chooses to help him, accepting responsibility for forcing Allen toward the crisis surrounding the Fourteenth.
Relationships
Relationships
Allen Walker begins as Kanda's irritating new colleague and frequent rival. Kanda calls him "Beansprout," while Allen readily returns the hostility. Their relationship develops into genuine trust, and Kanda later chooses to support Allen despite the Black Order treating him as a dangerous fugitive.
Alma Karma is the other surviving product of the Second Exorcist experiments and Kanda's closest companion during their childhood in the laboratory. Their relationship becomes tragic when Alma discovers the truth of their creation and turns against the researchers. Later revelations connect Alma directly to the person Kanda has spent his new life searching for.
Froi Tiedoll is Kanda's General and mentor. Tiedoll treats his disciples with paternal affection despite Kanda's resistance to overt sentimentality.
Lavi has known Kanda since before Allen's arrival and delights in irritating him, especially by using his given name. Kanda responds with threats but nevertheless treats Lavi as a trusted fellow Exorcist.
Lenalee Lee is one of Kanda's oldest acquaintances at the Black Order. She is comfortable confronting his temper and remains one of the companions he quietly values.
Noise Marie serves alongside Kanda in Tiedoll's unit and has enough familiarity with him to understand the concern hidden beneath his abrasive behavior.
