Youka Naze

Naze is eccentric, abrasive and obsessed with research. She deliberately makes herself uncomfortable and unattractive because she distrusts happiness and finds misery easier to understand.

She approaches injuries and experiments with an alarming lack of concern, including her own. Her medical brilliance combines with a willingness to test dangerous ideas directly rather than allowing fear of pain to interfere.

Despite her cold presentation, Naze is capable of intense attachment. Her friendship with Itami Koga is particularly important because Koga accepts her eccentricities without demanding that she become more conventional.

Naze's Abnormality, Remodeling, allows her to alter biological bodies through her extraordinary medical and scientific knowledge. She performs extensive modifications on Koga and can adapt bodies for extreme physical conditions.

She is an accomplished physician, surgeon and researcher capable of treating injuries that would overwhelm ordinary medical care. Her willingness to experiment on herself also means she can alter her own physical capabilities when necessary.

Naze later develops the Minus Ice Fire, which manipulates temperature in both directions. It allows her to generate extreme cold and heat, dramatically expanding her combat capability beyond biological modification.

Naze appears as one of the central researchers behind the Flask Plan and supervises experiments designed to understand and reproduce Abnormality. Her laboratory becomes one of the Student Council's major destinations as it investigates the plan.

Her deliberately hidden appearance and detached behavior initially make her seem more comfortable with experiments than people. Koga's friendship gradually exposes a more personal side beneath that persona.

Naze is eventually revealed to be Kujira Kurokami, Medaka's older sister and the middle child of the Kurokami siblings. She abandoned her family identity and erased her own memories in pursuit of unhappiness, making her role in the Flask Plan inseparable from the family she tried to escape.

After the Flask Plan conflict, she becomes more directly involved with the protagonists and later serves as vice-president in Zenkichi's Student Council.

Itami Koga is Naze's closest friend and research partner. Itami Koga's acceptance of her becomes one of Naze's strongest emotional attachments.

Medaka Kurokami initially encounters Naze as a Flask Plan researcher. Naze is actually Medaka's older sister, Kujira Kurokami, although she has deliberately distanced herself from the Kurokami family.

Maguro Kurokami has a complicated history with Naze through both the Flask Plan and their family. He is her older brother and recognizes the identity she attempted to abandon.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi becomes one of Naze's allies after the Flask Plan conflict. She later serves as vice-president of his Student Council.

Oudo Miyakonojou works within the same Flask Plan environment, although Naze's scientific priorities and his enormous ego frequently produce very different approaches to the project.
