Tessai Tsukabishi

Tessai is stern, composed and meticulous. He maintains order at the Urahara Shop and acts as the principal disciplinarian when Jinta Hanakari becomes disruptive. His formal speech and rigid posture reinforce the impression of a traditional military officer.

He also has a sentimental and eccentric side. Praise for his shop work can move him to tears, while criticism provokes immediate irritation. He buys dubious medicines advertised on television and is among the few people who sincerely enjoy Orihime Inoue's unconventional cooking.

His loyalty to Urahara is absolute but not mindless. Tessai understands his employer's evasive habits and helps carry out dangerous plans because their relationship rests on long experience and shared responsibility.

As the former Kidō Corps captain, Tessai can perform exceptionally advanced Hadō and Bakudō, often without complete incantations. His offensive repertoire includes Hadō #88, Hiryū Gekizoku Shinten Raihō, a massive lightning blast normally associated with the highest levels of Kidō mastery.

He can also use Bakudō #99, Kin, to immobilize powerful targets through layered bindings. His knowledge extends to forbidden Kidō that manipulates time and space, including Jikanteishi, which halts time within a defined area, and Kūkanten'i, which transports a selected volume of space elsewhere.

Tessai's physical strength is considerable even without spells. He can restrain spiritually powerful opponents, survive punishing impacts and provide emergency treatment for severe supernatural injuries.

More than a century before the main story, Tessai serves as captain of the Kidō Corps with Hachigen Ushōda as his lieutenant. When several Soul Reapers undergo forced Hollowfication, he accompanies Urahara to the scene and uses forbidden temporal and spatial techniques in an attempt to save them.

Sōsuke Aizen's manipulation causes Tessai and Urahara to be blamed for the incident. Yoruichi Shihōin rescues them before sentencing can be carried out, after which Tessai settles in the Human World and helps conceal the exiles.

In the present, Tessai supports Ichigo's early Soul Reaper training, helps maintain Urahara's underground training area and tends to injured allies. His reduced visibility in later battles reflects his primarily logistical role rather than any loss of expertise.

Kisuke Urahara is Tessai's childhood friend, employer and fellow exile. Tessai accepts a subordinate role at the shop despite once holding an equivalent captain-level office.

Yoruichi Shihōin grew up alongside Tessai and Urahara at the Shihōin estate. Her intervention allowed them to escape Soul Society after Aizen's conspiracy.

Hachigen Ushōda served as Tessai's lieutenant in the Kidō Corps and shares his specialization in high-level barrier and binding spells.

Ururu Tsumugiya and Jinta Hanakari are the young shop workers under Tessai's care. He disciplines Jinta and treats Ururu's injuries after her dangerous encounter with an Arrancar.

Ichigo Kurosaki trains in facilities maintained by Tessai, who repeatedly assists him through dangerous stages of his development.
