Sugadaira

Sugadaira receives little characterization away from basketball. He accepts a reserve role behind one of Kanagawa's leading centers and enters difficult situations when Taoka needs to protect Uozumi from further fouls.

He does not display the confrontational temperament of his captain or the flamboyant confidence of Sendoh. His characterization is primarily functional, presenting him as a bench player trying to perform against opponents considerably stronger than himself.

Sugadaira is a trained center capable of filling Ryonan's interior position temporarily. His size allows him to operate around the basket, but he lacks Uozumi's strength, defensive presence and rebounding ability.

This difference becomes especially clear against Akagi. With Uozumi on the bench, Shohoku can attack the interior more freely, and Sugadaira struggles to prevent its captain from influencing the game.

No signature move or exceptional specialty is established for him.

Sugadaira appears as part of Ryonan's bench during the decisive stages of the Kanagawa tournament. Against Kainan, he is used when Uozumi's foul problems force changes at center.

The same situation occurs against Shohoku. When Uozumi collects his fourth foul, Taoka temporarily removes his captain and sends Sugadaira into the game.

Shohoku exploits Uozumi's absence and builds momentum, forcing Taoka to return his captain earlier than he would have preferred. Sugadaira subsequently returns to the bench.

Jun Uozumi is Ryonan's starting center and the player Sugadaira replaces when substitutions or foul trouble require it.

Moichi Taoka is Sugadaira's coach and uses him primarily as relief for Uozumi.

Takenori Akagi presents Sugadaira with a severe matchup problem when he enters against Shohoku.

Akira Sendoh, Kicchou Fukuda and Hiroaki Koshino are among Sugadaira's Ryonan teammates.
