Moichi Taoka

Taoka is loud, demanding and intensely competitive. His training is so punishing that merely asking his players to remember it produces visible discomfort, yet his severity comes from a serious commitment to making Ryonan a national-level team.

He is also capable of patience when he believes a player genuinely needs it. Uozumi struggles badly as a beginner and considers quitting, but Taoka recognizes the value of his size and convinces him to continue rather than simply discarding him.

Taoka's greatest weakness is that his confidence in his own evaluations can become overconfidence. He sometimes categorizes players too quickly, then builds tactics around assumptions that an opponent is capable of overturning.

Taoka is an experienced coach with a strong eye for basketball talent. He recognizes Sendoh's exceptional potential immediately and understands that Kicchou Fukuda can become an elite scorer.

His recruiting ambitions are extensive. Taoka attempts to bring Mitsui, Miyagi and Rukawa to Ryonan, envisioning a lineup combining them with Sendoh and Uozumi. Each ultimately chooses Shohoku instead.

Tactically, Taoka emphasizes defense and matchup exploitation. He studies opponents for weaknesses and is willing to alter Ryonan's rotation by using defensive specialist Ryoji Ikegami or changing Sendoh's responsibilities.

Taoka is a recurring rival coach throughout Shohoku's Kanagawa campaign. His Ryonan team first exposes Shohoku's weaknesses during an early practice game and later becomes one of its principal obstacles to national qualification.

His history with Uozumi demonstrates the constructive side of his demanding coaching. By contrast, his treatment of Fukuda reveals its limits: constant criticism affects the sensitive forward very differently from the way Taoka expects.

Fukuda eventually strikes Taoka during a practice after enduring repeated criticism and is suspended from the team. Taoka later recognizes that his coaching approach was wrong and reintegrates Fukuda as a major offensive weapon.

Against Shohoku, Taoka's tactical assumptions repeatedly focus on weaknesses such as Sakuragi's inexperience and Shohoku's bench depth. When those assumptions fail, Ryonan loses narrowly. Taoka accepts responsibility afterward, insisting that his players themselves were excellent and that the defeat was his as coach.

Akira Sendoh is Taoka's greatest success as a recruit and the player he trusts most with Ryonan's decisive possessions.

Jun Uozumi develops from an awkward beginner into one of Kanagawa's leading centers because Taoka refuses to let him give up.

Kicchou Fukuda exposes a major flaw in Taoka's coaching methods. Taoka's relentless criticism pushes Fukuda to attack him, after which Taoka eventually recognizes his mistake.

Riki Takato is Taoka's longtime acquaintance and coaching rival from Kainan.
